Caernarfon 5 v Cross Keys 64
This Ladies Welsh Cup Semi Final proved a step too far for Caernarfon as they found the star-studded opponents too hot to handle despite putting up brave resistance throughout.
Welsh international standoff Naomi Thomas was the orchestrator and ran proceedings using her pace and deft passing to good effect constantly. It was her break after five minutes that allowed present Jamie Kift to open the scoring. However, the Cofis fought back with their scrum gaining more than parity. One take in the opponents twenty-two led to a Dyddgu Hywel chip being regathered with her strength taking her beyond the touchline to level the scores.
Following this, the Cofis faced the constant threat of the visitor’s backline and although the tackling was generally good, there was usually an added player at hand to prolong the attack.
Before the close of the half Cross Keys had added a further five tries, two to Welsh hooker Rhian Bowden one to winger Charlie Murray and two to playmaker Naomi Thomas.
Caernarfon started the second half brightly and were camped on the try line but were unable to cross the whitewash despite the encouragement of Captain Cenin Eifion. Three breaks from their own half saw Thomas score twice more and Kift recorded a further score.
Caernarfon winger Manon Williams had however come close after lengthy runs but she was caught just short of the try line on two occasions and second row Erin Eifion would have crossed had the pass been to hand. Wing Charlie Murray completed the scoring to send Cross Keys to the final.
Caernarfon may be a little disappointed with the final score but learnt a lot about the pace the game is played at, at a higher level. Numerous performances were workmanlike and encouraging, notably Mary Atkinson, Elin Evans and Isi Rees and the ladies will regroup to concentrate on completing their league programme on a winning note.
