Caernarfon Ladies lose out in Final of Welsh National Plate Competition after epic journey to play Seven Sisters at neutral Maesteg
The venue at Maesteg was deemed to be neutral but with Caernarfon travelling for 5.00 hours and the opposition Seven Sisters with less than half an hour’s journey it leads to a question of fairness in deciding on the venue!
The game was a hard affair with Caernarfon controlling the first 20 but unable to make it count. The Seven Sisters no 8 Cari Bowen-Davies broke through some weak tackling to put no 9 and captain Bev Mainwaring through for the first score of the afternoon. Another 2 tries by Jami Davies and Cari Bowen-Davies saw Seven Sisters lead 17-0 on the half.
Unfortunately for Caernarfon a first minute try gave Seven Sisters an extra cushion and the power of Seven Sisters paid dividends to take the score to 24-0 and another easy try made the game safe. Caernarfon would not give up, and eventually Lauren Hassett ran well over 80 meters to put Caernarfon on the scoreboard and this led to great pressure by the Cofis in the last 10 minutes but it did not bear fruit and the game ended with Seven Sisters 31-5 winners.
This game will also be remembered as the farewell match for 2 stalwarts of Caernarfon Ladies. Both Kate Jones and Eurwen Williams will be hanging up their boots after over 10 years of service to the Cofis Ladies team and Clwb Rygbi Caernarfon. Kate and Eurwen’s tackle count during the game was as always - phenomenal with Kate making more than one try saving tackle. The team will also loose scrum half Olwyn Jones who is returning home to New Zealand but has threatened to return! All the team and the back room team wish Katie, Eurs and Olwyn well. It was also an occasion to savour for Mary Atkinson who had her first run out on the wing for Caernarfon and enjoyed some thumping tackles.
The experience of their first season will certainly bode well for Caernarfon next season when they will be playing in a new league structure to be announced soon.
Training will continue over the summer, contact: 07754599688 for further details.
