The following report was kindly supplied by the Welsh Rugby Union.
As mentioned in this week’s update from WRU chairman Gareth Davies, if anyone ever doubted the unique place Welsh rugby holds in the social infrastructure of our nation, they should no longer.
Clubs all over Wales have not only spring to action to help the vulnerable and key workers within their community, but have often coordinate the relief efforts or been first to answer the requests for help from bodies such as the NHS and local authorities.
Clubs like Dinbych whose motto is Heart of the Community and were only too pleased to help when asked to become a GP Fever Assessment Centre. Treharris also take pride in their place within the community, in particular following the tragic death of local girl Brooke Morris and a mother and daughter team of cooks are providing meals to key workers and the vulnerable in the area, delivered by club volunteers.
Hartridge too, very close to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, have played a key role in a huge fundraising effort which has provided ipads to the hospital so that families can communicate with loved ones, and also in providing meals to key workers and the vulnerable in the locality.
Many clubs have raised money for NHS charities. Rhydyfelin, Newcastle Emlyn, Caldicot, Magor and Morriston Under 12s just a few of those who have ‘braved the shave’ to show their support for NHS staff in particular, those clubs alone raising more than £6k.
Other clubs are rallying around to deliver food, prescriptions and other key supplies to elderly and vulnerable people in their area. Nant Conwy, Bethesda, many clubs in the Scarlets region, coordinated by the Scarlets Foundation, Aberavon, in conjunction with Age Connects are just a few examples of those, while others, such as Penallta and CRICC are delivering hands-on supplies to hospitals and NHS staff and there are even examples of clubs producing medical equipment to support the NHS at this time.
We’d love to hear how your club has been helping your community to cope during this difficult period.
