Dinbych’s Veteran side took another step forward on Saturday with the presentation of the team’s new kit by sponsor Nick Wynne of Happy Homes Furniture. The new kit design recalls the original red, amber and black colours of Clwb Rygbi Dinbych when founded in 1977 with dashes of blue to recognise the merger with the North Wales Hospital side. The team was also assisted in the purchase of the kit supplied by North Wales company Teejac, by support from Parkside Veterinary Surgery of Wirral.
Two of the jerseys will soon be airbound on their way to two of the Vets’ exiles. One will be making the trip to Jersey for Pat Dean ahead of the side’s return visit to the Channel Islands in the autumn. Another jersey will be making a longer trip to Afghanistan where Vets player Jason Willoughby is bravely serving his country.
The kit was launched with a fixture against a North Wales Barbarians XV. The visitors turned up with a strong squad of players who had all played representative level rugby in the past. The visitors had the edge in the scrummages and took an early lead with a converted try. Jon Casemore’s men then struck back as a BaBas ball was turned over on the Dinbych 10 metre line. Fly half Dave Lowe broke away and fed lock Dugie Gemmill (the oldest of Dinbych’s players) who stormed half of the pitch to score a memorable solo try. Richard Grace’s conversion brought the scores level. The BaBas then scored again just before half time to give themselves a slender 14-7 lead.
The second half proved equally compelling for the fair crowd of spectators. The BaBas forward power was countered by Dinbych’s greater flair in the backs. Dinbych enjoyed a period of good pressure and reward soon came. A quickly taken penalty on the 5 metre line saw the ball moved quickly out to the wing thanks to some fine inter-passing and scrum half Huw Edwards touched down for Dinbych’s second. The conversion was unsuccessful and allowed the BaBas to maintain their 14-12 lead.
The BaBas then opened up the margin. Dinbych struggled to contain a scrum on their own 5 metre line and the BaBas were awarded a penalty try. Dinbych continued to press in the closing stages of the game and were again duly rewarded. Scrum half Edwards proving his man of the match credentials picked up at the base of 5 metre ruck and darted through a gap in the BaBas defence for his second of the day. The conversion brought the score to 21-19, but despite Dinbych’s efforts a further try proved elusive.
The players from both sides and the spectators all agreed it had been a hugely enjoyable fixture and a fine way to round off the Vets’ inaugural season. The Veterans returned to action in the autumn looking to make an improved showing in this year’s Jersey 10s tournament.
