Coleg Llandrillo travelled to Llanelli for the annual Welsh Colleges Rugby 10’s tournament, where this year saw them draw Coleg Gower and Bridgend College in the group stages of the competition.
The first game against Coleg Gower was a tight affair, with two tries from Lewis Stockton, one from Harri Evans, and a conversion from Afon Bagshaw putting 17 points on the board for Llandrillo. However, a lack of concentration towards the end of the second half allowed Gower to tie the game at 17 all.
As Llandrillo began to settle in to the 10’s format during the second game against Bridgend College, the wet conditions couldn’t prevent Jordan Sheridan from scoring a hatrick of tries, plus one more try for Lewis Stockton and three conversions for Harri Evans in a 26-0 victory.
As a result of points scored Llandrillo were drawn against pre-tournament favourites and winners of group 2, Coleg Sir Gar, in the semi final. Coleg Sir Gar took an early lead following a long period of possession, leaving Llandrillo with a lot to think about. However, Llandrillo were not overwhelmed and started to fight their way back into the game with longer periods of possession and relentless defence.
Following two periods of excellent play, Lewis Stockton managed to find space on the outside of his opposite number and with a burst of pace ran in two long range tries. Sir Gar came back hard, but the constant pressure from Llandrillo told as second row Maredydd Francis intercepted a try scoring pass from Sir Gar and sprinted half the length of the field to score under the posts in what was possibly the most important try of the tournament. With only minutes left to play Coleg Sir Gar managed to record a second score, closing the gap to 19-14, but Llandrillo held out to book a place in the final.
The final saw Llandrillo up against group stage opponents Coleg Gower, but with confidence high following a superb semi final victory, Llandrillo made a positive start. Sam Turner opened the scoring with a well planned set piece move, soon to be followed by Harri Evans who did well to collect a spilled ball and carry it over the line. Despite being the dominant team for most of the game, it wasn’t until the later stages that Llandrillo sealed victory with further tries from Jordan Sheridan and Tom Hughes, taking the final score to 26-12.
This is another great achievement for Coleg Llandrillo Rugby Academy, and a big confidence boost as they head into the quarter final of the British Colleges Elite Competition against London Saracens Academy, Oakland’s College of Hertfordshire this Wednesday.
