Elen Evans was voted as the Meirionnydd Sports Person of the Year 2011 for her achievements on the rugby pitch
Local Sports Council Awards 2010/11
Summary of Achievements:
• Elen has been a permanent fixture in the Dolgellau Ladies’ Rugby Team since she turned 16. She has also represented Wales 36 times, gaining her first full senior cap playing against Ireland in 2004. Before that, she represented Wales a dozen times at U19 level being selected for that squad at the age of 17. She quickly rose through the ranks and represented the Senior team at the age of 19 (whilst still being eligible for the U19 team).
• In 2005 she was named ‘Player of the Year’ by the Welsh Women’s Rugby Union.
• She stepped down from International Duties in 2007 following a broken collar bone, but she continued to play for Dolgellau Ladies once she recovered from her injury. However, at the end of the 2008/09 season, she was successful in being selected for the then newly formed Women’s Scarlets Region and based on her exceptional performances for the Scarlets, she was subsequently asked by the Welsh Selectors to re-consider her International Career, and the rest is, as they say, history!
• Elen now coaches the Dolgellau Ladies who train on a Thursday night. Despite her obvious success and ability, she is the first person to encourage new players and inspire the team.
• As well as coaching the Senior Dolgellau Rugby Ladies team, she also coaches the promising youngsters within the Club, at the U12 age group. She has been involved on a weekly basis with the Junior Section since the section was reformed about 6 years ago.
• In the 2009/10 season she participated in the Women’s Rugby World Cup. During that season, Elen was committed to training Cardiff every weekend apart from two, from May 2010 onwards until the World Cup in August of that year, including a weekend spent on the Brecon Beacons courtesy of the Army! Elen’s personal achievement at the World Cup was scoring a try against the South Africans.
• She scored a hat-trick against Scotland in the 2010/11 6 Nations and was also named Player of the Match.
• She attends the Scarlet Region training and Wales Training weekends throughout the course of the season. She also spends time on her own in the gym, and individual training, as well as playing netball for the local netball team.
• As well as her sporting success, Elen is the first person to volunteer to help with fundraising events, helping behind the scenes by cooking/washing up, refereeing and coaching. She is the last person who will tell you what she has achieved and very humble about her success. The weekend after the conclusion of the World Cup she ran the Lake Vyrnwy half marathon for charity. In 2009, she was one of three Dolgellau Ladies Rugby players who raised in excess of £3,000 for the Air Ambulance doing a sky-dive.
