GC South made history on Saturday by recording their first ever win in the National Schools District Competition
GC South made history on Saturday by recording their first ever win in the National Schools District Competition. Having been put together for the first time this season, the squad finally got the win after coming close against Neath and Islwyn.
GC South got off to a rampaging start with prop Tom Andrews bouncing players off him as he galloped 60 meters up field. The ball was recycled quickly and lock Alun Hughes continued the go forward only to be held up over the line.
The game ebbed and flowed with the home side getting the big ball carriers going forward while Swansea looked dangerous when they spread the ball wide. After sustained pressure by the home team spaces appeared in the visitors defence and the home 10 Sam Jones exploited this with a searing break to score a fine try. This was converted by Twm Jones. Credit to the away team, they defended resolutely while the home team continued to apply pressure, the ball was then turned over and Swansea raced 80m to score. With the game at 7-7 Sam Jones scored a second try with another great break, but Swansea came back to level 12-12 at half time.
The second half was a tighter affair with both teams having chances but it was the home teams big ball carriers who really stepped it up and with them camped in the visitors 22, Prop Tom Andrews showed he still had some energy left to score the vital try.
GC South now travel to Aberavon looking to maintain the momentum and build on this success.
