A talented sportsman himself, Tegid represented Denbigh in rugby, football and cricket, as well as serving time as player-coach of Ruthin during the mid-80s. His last coaching stint was for a decade at Denbigh RFC and took the club to their first ever North Wales Cup Final appearance in his final season as Coach against Nant Conwy in 2009.
But one his proudest moments as a coach was introducing rugby to the province of New Brunswick in Canada and helping set up the Woodstock Warriors club.
“I was on a teaching exchange over in New Brunswick,” added Phillips. “And I take a lot of pride in introducing rugby to the area.
“I took over a video of the 1973 Barbarians match against New Zealand, the one with Gareth Edwards’ try and it seemed to catch the imagination of everyone and the game took off like wildfire. That’s one of the things I feel most proud of, the way the game has gone.”
Tegid looks forward to working with all the clubs in the North Wales Region and, should clubs have queries on any matter involving rugby in North Wales, he can be contacted as the per the details above.
