Rhyl Rugby Club report weekend 15/16 December 2012
With a free weekend in the WRU Division 2 North fixture list, Phil Blakoe’s 1st team were looking for a friendly match to get some badly needed game time, after 3 weeks of inactivity. However they were unable to do so and were left kicking their heels once again.
Mike Potter’s 2nd team were eagerly looking forward to travelling to local rivals Abergele, with the aim of making it 4 wins in a row over the Green Army. However Gele had to rearrange a first team fixture at home which meant having to cancel the second team fixture, leaving Potter’s side also with time for some Christmas shopping.
The Youth team travelled to Pwllheli and came away with just one penalty goal to show for their efforts as the home side ran in 3 tries for a 19-3 win. Rhyl’s forwards were out-muscled in the set pieces and at the breakdown where the side showed their lack of match fitness, with training limited due to the bad weather. Man of the match was Louie Collinge.
In the junior section, Rhyl’s scheduled games at the Waen for the U15 and U14 sides, were both cancelled, with Saturday’s rain turning the playing fields into streams.
Rhyl U10s scored a good win away at Ruthin, beating the home side 26-22. Callum Gardner ended the year with two tries and conversions which helped him to earn the Man of the Match award after a very impressive performance, backed up with strong forward running from Joshua King. Ewan Court opened the scoring with a try in the corner and a conversion, newcomer Harrison Evans added another try to keep Rhyl in front. Some fine passing from Kian McGregor and another strong captain’s performance from Owen Reece Jones saw Rhyl end the year on a high.
The U9 game was also postponed but the U8s also won at Ruthin.
