COLWYN BAY U13 24 v MOLD U13 10
A hat trick of tries from Peter Jones sealed a solid team performance as the Under 13s battled through the mud to claim the spoils against a robust Mold side.
Given the conditions a brave effort from the backs to be spread the ball wide created the opportunity for Peter Jones to score the first two tries. On occasion the conditions confounded the Bays bravery as Mold pounced on loose ball and used the Bays mistakes to drive hard up the middle scoring a try to reduce the deficit by half time.
The second half saw strength and resolve from the Bay forwards particularly Seb Marshall, Ruby Roberts, Nicholas Young and Joe Kilpatrick to take the game to Mold but were unable to stop Mold scoring the first try after the break bringing them within two points.
Sharp thinking by Sam Earl-Jones to take the kick-off quickly and to chase up him created a brilliant individual try and put the Bay back in the ascendancy to where Captain Peter Jones added a further try to claim a well deserved victory for the Bay.
Man of the Match: Sam Earl-Jones – for excellent thinking, tackling and running with the ball. Well done Sam!

COBRA U15s 0 v Dinbych U15s 50
Dinbych’s Under 15s and 14s made the long journey to Meifod in mid Wales to start their 2013 campaign at COBRA. Both teams made a successful start to the New Year with the Under 14s overcoming their hosts by 7-57.
The Under 15s also returned to winning form as they ran in 9 tries without reply to record a 0-49 victory. Full back Gruff Roberts crossed for a hat trick of tries with flanker Rhys Lloyd adding a brace in the second half. Dinbych’s other tries came from Captain Iwan Johnson, James Fisher-Jones, Aled Douglas and Sion Spencer with Josh Morris adding two conversions.
Dinbych having won the toss, elected to kick off and this resulted in an early score. COBRA gathered the ball from the kick off, but then sent a loose kick into the Dinbych half where it was collected by fly half Roberts. He set off on a solo sprint along the right touchline to open the scoring with an unconverted try.
A short time later, Roberts added a second. This time he kicked ahead and then showed his footballing skills as he chipped the ball forward before winning the chase to touch it down in the left corner.
Despite scoring two early tires, Dinbych were showing some signs of “bus-lag” and COBRA regrouped. Their forward unit showed good organisation in the tight and they kept Dinbych under pressure in their own 22 metre line for a period before the visitors managed to clear their lines. A swift Dinbych counter attack forced the host to concede a penalty on their own 22 metre line. This was swiftly taken by fly half Josh Morris who fed Iwan Johnson for the captain to crash over in the left corner for his side’s third unconverted try.
Dinbych added a fourth try before the interval. Some excellent interplay saw lock James Fisher-Jones released into space and he powered inform the 22 metre line to touch down to the right of the posts. Josh Morris’ conversion gave Dinbych a 0-22 lead. Dinbych attacked again from the restart and Fisher-Jones did very well to take a high ball, but it was to prove costly as the RGC academy player injured his knee and had to retire.
Dinbych introduced 5 replacements at the interval and the second half performance was to prove the strength in depth of the squad. Dinbych scored early after the restart with Iwan Johnson taking a quick penalty which was fed wide to centre Aled Douglas to storm through the COBRA defence. Josh Morris added the extras and Dinbych now had a 0-29 lead.
Dinbych’s sixth try was another demonstration of the complete team rugby being played. COBRA won a line out on their own 5 metre line on the right touchline but under pressure from the Dinbych pack the ball was knocked forward and quickly recycled to the backs. Some fine running and passing from the backs saw centre Brad Reid make good ground before he offloaded to replacement wing Sion Spencer to sprint in for a fine try.
Dinbych went in search of another try but COBRA defended creditably under severe pressure in their own 5 metre zone. The home defence was eventually breached by flanker Rhys Lloyd who showed excellent pace and body position as he crashed through for Dinbych’s seventh try.
COBRA continued to battle and were much tougher opponents than the scoreline suggested. Dinbych seized possession again and Gruff Roberts went on another of his trademark runs from half way. He was tackled 10 metres out but the COBRA defence could not hold him and the full back went over for his hat trick in the corner.
The last play of the game saw Rhys Lloyd break through on the 22 metre line and run through to cross under the posts earning Dinbych a 0-49 lead.
The win sets up Dinbych for two tough games in the coming weeks with Bangor visiting Caeau Les Phillips on Sunday and then the Vale of Clwyd derby at Rhuthun on 20 January.

Also watching the match Rupert Moon, ex-Wales international and top man at the RGC.
