Dinbych Under 14s 24 v Llandudno Under 14s 59
A spirited performance and 4 tries were not enough to prevent Dinbych U14s losing their 8 game unbeaten record. Visitors Llandudno were the last team to have inflicted a defeat on Dinbych at the start of the season and they took the honours again as a seven try blitz in the first half saw them to a 24-59 victory. One of the many positives for Dinbych from the game was a hat trick for full back Gruff Roberts.
Dinbych struggled with the physical challenge of the much bigger Llandudno team and quickly found themselves four tries down. To Dinbych’s credit they did not let their heads drop and got themselves back into the game. Fly half Josh Morris spotted space to the right and hoisted a high kick up for the backs to chase. Jake Vaughan Thomas collected the ball inside the Llandudno half and made good ground before being felled on the 22 metre line. Gruff Roberts was in close support and broke away to cross for Dinbych’s opening try. Morris added the conversion. Llandudno’s first half power show was not over however as they added another 3 tries to lead 7-39 at the interval.
Dinbych drew the first blood in the second half. A fine period of play saw them into the Llandudno 22, and number 8 Jake Jones picked up from the base of rick to cross in the left corner for an unconverted try. Llandudno responded with another unconverted try before Roberts got his second try of the afternoon. Again this came from some good work by the forwards combining with the pace of the backs. Morris’ conversion brought the scores to 19-44 but Llandudno again replied with an unconverted try.
Dinbych’s fourth try again came as a result of good attacking play. A penalty in midfield was neatly kicked into touch by Josh Morris 10 metres out from the Llandudno try line. Dinbych won the line out and Jake Jones looked to set to cross into the corner when he was bundled into touch. The moment appeared to have passed as Llandudno won the next line out, but Dinbych turned the ball over and fed it quickly wide to allow Gruff Roberts to run in for his hat trick.
In the closing moments, with Dinbych’s players tiring after a terrific effort, Llandudno ran in two further tries to show why they are this season’s form side in North Wales at this age group. Dinbych can take some solace from a much improved performance over the previous encounter and the fact they are one of the few sides to give Llandudno a sufficient challenge to take the game to full time.
Dinbych’s players will learn from this encounter and will be hoping to return to winning ways next Sunday at Caernarfon.

Mold Under 12's 10 v Colwyn Bay Under 12's 26
Rooky Rowland’s makes Impact
A brilliant Peter Jones individual try 10 minutes into the game broke the deadlock in a stodgy start to the return fixture at Mold as the players found it hard to run off the Christmas break
The team found it difficult to keep their shape as they where severely tested by the robust Mold forwards. However Will Opies clever distribution and encouragement sent the ball wide to the Bays exciting backline. Some direct strong running by rooky Matthew Rowlands brought the play close to the Molds line and good clearing out by Conner Hogan and Jo Fisher presented the ball for No 8 Sion Edwards to crash over a well worked team try.
Mold came back with a try from loose tackling at the scrum to which the Bay soon responded with a multi phase play with backs and forwards combining resulting in Joe Fisher running from deep to crash through three tacklers to score a classic second row try.
The Bay must learn from Molds low body positions in contact as they drove the Bay back time after time ultimately creating the opportunity for a well taken try. The Bay finally realised they needed to spread the ball wide which created a text book try as clever passing from Peter Jones and Tom Cuddihy brought in Sam Earl-Jones on the burst from full back to run half the pitch past numerous flailing defenders to score under the posts. Sam Earl-Jones went on to convert this and two other conversions.
The Bay can build on this convincing win by utilising the ball out wide and lowering their body positions to use technique to do the work. A good debut by Matthew Rowlands and good performances from the newer team members who combined well with the experienced players gives encouragement for the future.
Man of the match goes to Will Opie for clever distribution bringing in both forwards and backs to vary the game. Well done Will.
