Caernarfon Ladies were left totally devastated as they lost this enthralling match to the last kick of the game. Both teams had an unbeaten run in the league prior to this encounter so one 100% record was due to tumble
The opening exchanges were very even with the Cofi ladies coping well with the far heavier pack at scrum time and edging the lineout tussle. On ten minutes, a Dyddgu Hywel break from full back enabled the Cofis to camp in the danger zone and when Kidwelly were penalised for offside a short penalty drive via Sera Bailey saw recycled ball coming blind with Nia Thomas charging over to score a good team try.
The competitive nature of all concerned was never questioned with the Cofis keeping possession well and maintaining pressure for sustained periods. After half an hour, a penalty resulted in a quick tap and go that saw the ball swept wide for Bailey to come close. However, quick recycling by Becky Williams gave her the momentum to reach the line and add another five points.
Kidwelly made a concerted effort to redress the balance before half time but wonderful tackles by Jenna Tugwell and Emma Edwards kept them at bay.
The second half saw Kidwelly exerting more sustained pressure to test the Cofi defence with outside half Jodie Evans kicking for territory to keep Caernarfon on defensive duties. One quick scrum strike allowed the outside half time to catch the defence in two minds and she ghosted through to score under the posts and duly add the conversion to her own try.
Kidwelly maintained pressure but move after move was thwarted by the Cofi rearguard. Mid way through the half, a turn over ball was fed to Dyddgu Hywel who beat her opponent on the outside on the twenty-two. Finding herself in space and with no support, she backed her ability and ran the length of the field to score a classic individual effort. The conversion drifted agonisingly wide but the Cofis had an eight point cushion going into the last quarter.
Some end-to-end play followed with no one being able to make a telling break but with ten minutes remaining the outside half just succeeded to free her outside centre Karen Mayze, who had been a threat with her strong direct running on numerous occasions, and she duly reached the try line. With the successful conversion the remaining few minutes were nail biting for all concerned and the Cofis were dealt the cruellest of blows when on the last play a penalty was awarded within kicking distance and Jodie Evans kept her nerve to become the hero of the day.
Caernarfon Ladies can however be immensely proud of their play and conduct on the field throughout the eighty minutes and will seek retribution when and if the opposition visit Y Morfa for the return encounter.
