Caernarfon succumbed to a dominant set piece during what the ladies themselves would classify as their most disappointing performance of the season to date.
The effect of the bus journey was difficult to shake off, for only after one promising early attack they found themselves encamped in their own half for long periods. Kidwelly’s first foray resulted in a scrum close to the line, with the second pick up and go by Amy Tayler deemed initially to have been grounded on the whitewash, a score the referee later apologised for having granted.
Caernarfon came back to apply pressure and after phase upon phase of recycling a penalty afforded Sera Bailey a sweetly struck penalty to reduce the arrears.
From this point Kidwelly were quicker to the loose ball ad despite heroic defending by the likes of Alaw Davies, Lowri Wynn, Elin Royle and Felicity Smith out wide the home pack were able to gain good field positions.
A scrum five became the perfect platform for the number eight to pickup and drive with her offload finding scrum half Keely Evans at hand to score. Bailey failed with one attempt from distance to close the gap but were then dealt a blow when a good sweeping move found fly half Karen Maize on the inside shoulder to breach the defence and extend Kidwelly’s lead.
The half time respite allowed re-grouping but that failed to have the immediate effect, as early in the second half scrum half Evans again darted from the base of the scrum to score Kidwelly’s fourth try.
From this point the Cofis started to gain more forward momentum and were for a period of time able to exert pressure and cause some confusion in the home defence. Better recycling allowed the ball to be fed wider with the other ex Dolgellau product competent at counter attacking from deep. Finally her timely intervention from Elin Evans’s pass allowed winger Lowri Wynn to crash over out wide. With ten minutes to go the pressure failed to be maintained and the game drew to a scrappy conclusion.
Next week its a home fixture against Whitland where an effort to seek revenge will be called for.
