This feisty local derby provided the local “aficionados” with a fine 80 minutes entertainment! Not a caterpillar in sight and the only box mentioned was the one holding the gate money!!
Cefni’s 1st 6 points came from the unlikely source of prop Ifan Wyn’s left boot! His 1st pen was from half way and the 2nd from a mere 35 metres, both sweetly struck! During the 1st quarter Cefni had a clear edge at scrum time and MB really struggled for field position . However, when they finally got into home territory, their well drilled back line were quick to capitalise! Quick ruck ball and smooth passing led to Gareth Parry powering over near the right flag. Soon after down the same flank, Dave Williams dummied and sprinted over wide out. MB 10-6 up after 25 minutes.
Cefni were not as clinical in the red zone, and a promising attack was ended by a MB interception . Towards the end of the half, the MB scrum gained ascendancy, and Dion Mc Grath seemed to score at the left flag. However a last ditch Declan Griffiths tackle dislodged the ball. However MB were well on top at this stage and Vaughan Francis stormed over near the posts. McGrath added the extras and a 3 pointer for a 20-6 score at the break (no oranges!!)
MB maintained their ascendancy during the 3rd quarter. A rushed Cefni clearance kick led to Vaughan Francis cutting through the home defence for his brace. Dion Mc’s extras made it 27-6. Both MB wings were dangerous all match, and after the 14 made a long break into the home 22, it led to a try for Daniel Hughes in the left corner! 34-6 with the extras and the floodgates might have opened.
However some astute substitutions gave Cefni new impetus: both Dafydd Eccles and Richard Foulkes had a big impact. Eccles showed an insatiable appetite for running through brick walls! His pack responded and MB were under the pump, and had a player carded for a high tackle. Cefni’s 1st try came from an MB error as they dropped a pass while running from deep. Deiniolen Llewelyn scooped up the ball and cantered over at the posts: Foulkes converted for 13-34.
Foulkes had already made some trademark bursts between tacklers, but then chose a well weighted grubber into the 22. MB failed to gather and Foulkes kicked through and won the ball on the deck before crossing. He also drop kicked the conversion with aplomb.
No more scores and MB were clear winners. However, there was much encouragement for Cefni: the youngsters performed bravely with Ben Jones at 15 coping well with a barrage of kicks. However, above all it was so good to see Declan Griffiths back in harness, breaking tackles and making countless metres beyond the first collision.
