Dolgellau 45 v Bangor 3
Following report kindly supplied by Dolgellau RFC.
Dolgellau eased into the draw for the 3rd round of the Bowl thanks in the main to their dominance and haul of five tries in the first twenty five minutes of the match to kill the tie.
The blues took the lead after eight minutes, created and scored by wing Rhys Lewis with the assistance of stand-off Eben Jones. Wing Jake Hinge added the conversion to make it 7-0. Six minutes later, Dolgellau marched on from a five meter lineout, and prop Dewi Puw emerged from the resulting drive and the try, that made the score 12-0.
Dolgellau hit a purple patch going into the second quarter, scoring three tries in five minutes. Wing Dafydd Ellis’ run along left touch saw hooker Celt Lewis feed centre Gareth Hughes to burst through for the try. Jake Hinge was accurate with the extras, and within two minutes the winger added his third conversion, of Gareth Hughes’ second try of the match, after he latched on to a sweet inside pass from outstanding flanker, Cellan Evans, to make it 26-0. A minute later Dolgellau wing, Dafydd Ellis’ pace up the left side found the visiting defence wanting ,and duly gathered his own chip ahead to score wide out in the left corner. 31-0 and the match was over as a contest after twenty five minutes.
Bangor then enjoyed a period of pressure and scored a well worked try themselves with centre Calvin Williams surging through to the right of the posts. Stand-off Henri Williams’ conversion was narrowly wide leaving the score 31-5 with five minutes of the half remaining. However their joy was short lived as Dolgellau scored their 6th try of the match with a minute remaining, as Dafydd Ellis’ meandering break found stand-off Eben Jones to finish off in style, and make it 36-5 at the interval.
Early in the second period Dolgellau ran a quick tap penalty, replacement Jack Kelly’s long pass finding speedy winger, Jake Hinge to score the try he duly converted to make it 43-5. To their credit, Bangor then dominated the rest of the match, but the closest they came to scoring was a disallowed effort by second row Shaun Kelly, as referee, Dylan Davies had spotted an infringement just as the Bangor pack were driving over the try line.

From the onset, it became obvious that the visiting pack was stronger than the home pack and things didn’t go well for Nant when prop, Gwynfor Morris, had to retire after 8 minutes play with a fractured hand. Full Back, John showed his remarkable pace in scoring Pwllheli’s early first try but Steffan responded with a successful penalty a few minutes later. The visiting experienced Flanker, scored Pwllheli’s second try after 28 minutes and Osian, the right winger converted. Again, Nant responded instantly when John this time dropped a high kick and the home Fly Half, Sion, outpaced him to gather the loose ball and passed it beautifully to Ifan, the Captain to score a try underneath the posts – Steffan turning it into a seven pointer. This give a 10 – 12 score at half time and neutral people watching the match complimenting the high level and excitement of play.
Pwllheli’s forwards scored another try through the other flanker, Ianto with replacement Nick Butterworth on permit from RGC, converting the try. Three quarter way through the match continious ‘pick and go’ pressure from the home forwards this time eventually saw no. 8, Carwyn, touching down right in the corner. There followed a superb conversion by Steffan to bring Nant within two points of Pwllheli. But, two quick tries by Tom for the visitors and ensuing two conversions by Nick ensured the win. But, Nant, as they do, did not give up and, arguably, the best passing movement of the match saw Full Back Caron score a try – his fifth in 4 games this season. Thus, the match ended with a score of 22 – 33 and both set of players can be proud of playing in such a good game of rugby where the result was in doubt until the last few minutes.
Next week, Nant will be playing Llandudno away in a Division 1 North League match.

Wrexham 2nds 88 v Flint 2nds 0 - match report
Following report kindly supplied by Keir Harding, Wrexham RFC.
Playing second team rugby in North Wales can be a baffling and bewildering experience. 3 weeks ago Wrexham blew into a stormy Bala and eeked out a win with 13 players and no front row. This week Wrexham seconds entertained Flint seconds at home and fielded a squad of 20 including 5 front row.
There was a range of experience in the Wrexham team with toddler Will Smith stepping up from youth to play his first senior game, while veterans Guy Bingham and Kerry Powell returned from their sabbaticals in Llangollen to add a mix of sage wisdom, wrecking ball style scrummaging bone rattling tackles.
In the heavy wind Wrexham kicked to Flint for what proved to be Wrexham’s only restart of the game. Despite the first team playing the same day Wrexham’s squad was bursting with rare quality that Flint found overwhelming. In the backs James Price always seemed to have time on the ball and when he wasn’t making breaks himself, he unleashed Jack O’Donnell and Blake Turner to devastating effect. At full back Adam Jones amazed everyone with his phenomenal dummy kick and his appalling actual kick, going on to claim a rare try under the posts. Daniel Lloyd showed some beautiful hands to keep moves going and Jake Thomas was always in the right spot to support.
In the pack Anthony Westgarth returned from his long exile to add power around the pitch while Jake Edwards danced and pounded his way through the Flint defence like the 20 stone ballerina that he is. Last years player of the year Liam Hutchinson also made his return and fell into his old form immediately. Shane Kahn astounded the crowd by remaining on the pitch without being carded. Keir Harding had to leave the pitch with a broken heart after making a pass and realising that he didn’t need to.
The Wrexham tries came thick and fast with hat tricks for James Price, Blake Turner and Kerry Powell. Other scorers included Jack O’Donnell and Adam Jones.
While Wrexham enjoyed the day it was a difficult time for Flint who stuck at it for thefull 80 minutes. They had some great moments but however good the break or solid the defence, it never seemed enough to hold Wrexham at bay for long. Despite this they were gentlemen to play against and we look forward to our trip to theirs.
Wrexham captain Danny Guy stated he was ashamed of the 80 point win and spent 20 minutes with each player talking them through what they could have done better, not stopping until many of them were in tears. Next week Wrexham will be astounded if anything like todays squad makes it to Bethesda, where they will be hoping for their 4th league win. Barry Lewis on the sideline said “I’m not director of rugby anymore so I don’t really give a toss”.
Ruthin 36 v Llangefni 10 - match report
Following report kindly supplied by Ruthin RFC.
Ruthin got off to a good start against Llangefni when after 5 minutes play No 8 Jordan Jones went over the line for a try.
The Blues kept up the pressure with the pack performing well against Cefni’s big forwards and after 20 minutes the pressure told with try number 2 coming from wing Bryn Sheppard. The visitors responded and for the last 15 minutes of the first half much of the play was in Ruthin’s half as Cefni tried to reduce the arrears.
The Blues defence held and play returned to the visitors’ territory and on half time fly half Phyl Roberts went over the whitewash with full back Dyfan Humphreys converting and Ruthin were ahead 17-0.
The home side continued their attack after the break and 10 minutes in wing Josh Wilson broke through Cefni’s defence and offloaded to second row Sion Roberts who got the bonus point try with Humphreys converting.
Again the visitors responded and eventually got the better of the Blues defence and Greg Horseman went over for a try. The gap widened again though within 5 minutes when Wilson broke through again and offloaded to centre Emyr Gwynedd for the Blues 5th try.
Again Cefni came back and were rewarded with a try from Sior Greaves but it was the Blues that had the last score on the 80th minute with Josh Wilson crossing the line and Humphreys converting.
The final score was 36-10 to Ruthin finishing off a good day with both youth and 2nd teams winning their matches against Newtown and Bethesda.
Dinbych 5 v Llandudno 33 - match report
Following report kindly supplied by Dinbych RFC.
Llandudno travelled to Caeau Les Phillips with the top spot firmly in their sights.
This five try bonus point victory by Llandudno allowed them to leapfrog Nant Conwy to the top of Division 1 North. In a game of two halves influenced by a stiff breeze blowing directly down the field Dinbych dominated the first half but failed to take their chances when attacking close to the Llandudno line. This was in contrast to the visitors who were much more clinical with the elements in their favour in the second half when they notched up four tries for a convincing victory.
Dinbych started well with the wind at their back and the forwards doing particularly well in the scrums where props Gareth Jones and Joe Davies provided a strong platform. With Dinbych dominating both territory and possession half backs Jordan Wynne and Garin Roberts were able to initiate a series of attacks. However they were never able to breach a watertight Llandudno defence with the visitors also strong at the breakdown which disrupted Dinbych's momentum. The hosts also failed to capitalised on one of their normal strengths as they lost possession at a number of short range attacking line-outs to let Llandudno off the hook. Llandudno always looked dangerous especially when they moved the ball through the backs and Dinbych were given a warning after half an hour in a rare Llandudno range attack into home territory when the visitors just failed to score from chasing a kick over the line. With Dinbych then depleted for a sin binning offence the visitors did however open the scoring in the last minute of the half when Dan O'Sullivan finished off another incisive attack from a line out near half way for a try which full back Ryan Pyke converted.
Llandudno again made their numerical advantage count in the opening minutes of the second half as they now dominated territorially and they increased their lead after Dinbych lost possession at a line out near their line from which centre and captain Ed Weston crossed for a try after the visitors exerted heavy pressure. They went further ahead following another short range line out from which the forwards generated a driving maul for hooker Alan Meredith to claim the touch down. Ed Weston then crossed for his second and Llandudno's bonus point try capitalising on slick handling following a scrum to the right of the posts after another period of heavy pressure near the Dinbych line. Ryan Pyke added the conversion points to all three tries before he finished off a break from a scrum 40 metres out for a try which he failed to convert.
Although outgunned in the second half Dinbych heads never dropped as they attempted to attack at every opportunity and they got some reward for their efforts with a consolation score in the closing minutes when they launched a number of attacks into Llandudno territory. A strong burst by Gareth Jones was the catalyst leading to recycling possession from a maul inside the visitor's 22 with Gareth Beach flicking a pass on to replacement flanker Tom Eden to go over for an unconverted try.
Dinbych 2nds 32 v Pwllheli 2nds 48 - match report
Following report kindly supplied by Dinbych RFC.
For the second week in succession Pwllheli had the better of a young Dinbych side this time to make further progress in the Welsh Bowl competition. Dinbych had first advantage of the Caeau Les Phillips slope and took the lead with a try by right wing Dylan Easton following a long break out from his own 22 by scrum half Arwyn Williams. Captain Tom Evans added the conversion points. They increased their lead with an unconverted try by Arwyn Williams after heavy pressure by the forwards. They went further ahead when outside half Iwan Johnson took advantage of good approach play by James Rowse and Roger Clayton to cross for Dinbych's third but unconverted try. Pwllheli then hit back with a brace of tries, one of which was converted. Dinbych then increased their lead just before the interval with an unconverted try by full back Tom Wynne who intercepted a pass in his own 22 and then outpaced the Pwllheli defence in a run to the line.
Trailing at the interval by 22 points to 12 Pwllheli reduced the deficit with a converted try before Tom Evans again edged Dinbych ahead with a penalty. Pwllheli responded once again with an unconverted try before scrum half Dafydd Cartwright scorched over for a try after No.8 James Rowse had broken away from a scrum on half way. Tom Evans converted but Dinbych could not maintain their momentum and were gradually overtaken as Pwllheli who now used the slope advantage to good effect to close the game with a burst of three late tries to cap an excellent cup clash involving two attacking sides.
Dinbych 5 v Llandudno 33 - the Dudno match report
Following report kindly supplied by Llandudno RFC.
The Goats Top Division One North with another away win, and remain unbeaten setting up a mouth watering home encounter at Maesdu Road, against Nant next Saturday.
This was their second win in the Vale of Clwyd, having beaten Ruthin last week, and yet again they left the best until the second half of play. It took them until just short of the forty minute mark to open up there scoring, when from a line out well inside of the home half, that quick ball won, and released to the backs saw Dan O"Sullivan break through the home defence to touch down, with two extra points from the conversion by Ryan Pike, taking them into the second half of play.
What ever was said by the coaching team at the break, brought its rewards in the second period of play, from the start they attacked the home line of defence, and it was from a stolen ball at a Denbigh line out, that Ed Weston received the ball, and drove over the try line with Pike adding two more points from the conversion kick.
The Goats were now hunting as a pack, and once more from a line out that Aled Meredith was driven over the try line for a touch down, with the reliable boot of Pike once again converting for maximum seven points.
This second half was mainly of the Goats putting up a strong solid defence, and with ball in hand looking the more threatening, and it was from a set piece that the pack took play forward gaining ground, and then the backs used at pace with Ed Weston touching down for his second try of the match, which Pike converted.
The match now had reached the eighty ninth minute, and the Goats now pressed to obtain maximum match points, and this came from a counter attacked from well inside of their own half with ball being used again at pace, which put the home defence on the back foot, and it was their Talisman Ryan Pike who was on the receiving end of a try scoring pass, which he also converted.
The match was now won with very little time left, but the home side enjoyed a brief period of play, and finished with a try by Tom Eden.
Next Saturday at Nant KO 2.30. Match Report by Howie.
