BANGOR 47 v 14 HOLYHEAD
The Bangor youth team had their game postponed so some of the older youths joined some new recruits and some Bangor regulars to create a formidable team but they took all the first half to come together and start playing well.
Holyhead started well and aided by many penalties against Bangor they pressed hard for some time from the start and tested the Bangor defence severely. A penalty gave them a lineout 5 metres out and from the line John Richard Jones scrambled over for a try converted by Aaron Edwards. The restart gave Bangor a chance to get into the visitors half and Bangor equalised with a fine try from outside half Iwan Roberts who also converted.
Holyhead went ahead again with a gifted interception to Josh Jones who took his chance well to run 75 metres and score under the post. The conversion from Edwards was a formality.
The second half was a totally different game with Bangor gelling and making fewer infringements. With lots of ball and free passing Bangor tamed the visitors and overwhelmed them. Iwan Roberts scored another fine try and conversion to bring the scores level.
Left winger Chris Webb went in next and Roberts again converted. Forward Ryan Butler scored the next try that went unconverted. Roberts was having a gold spell and scored another self converted try.
Youth forward Rhys Williams rounded off a superb performance with a deserved try converted by Roberts. Roberts went on to complete his hat trick of tries. The last score came from prop Gareth Roberts with a strong burst through the defence taking tacklers with him over the line. Iwan Roberts added his 6th conversion and the final whistle blew.

Dyma’r drydedd gêm yn olynol i Nant chwarae i ffwrdd ar ddechrau’r tymor newydd. Eto, roedd yn brynhawn heulog a braf gydag awel i lawr yr oledd. Dechreuodd Nant yn bwrpasol a chollwyd dau gyfle i sgorio cais yn y munudau cyntaf pan aeth y bas olaf ar chwal y ddau dro. Ond, ar ôl 10 munud, gorffenwyd ymosodiad gyda’r cefnwr Grant yn tirio allan ar y chwith. Methwyd yr ymgais am y trosi (fel yn wir a ddigwyddodd ar ôl pob cais i Nant heddiw.)
Chwarter ffordd drwy’r hanner, taflwyd pas wael gan y tîm cartref wrth amddiffyn a bu i Iolo, yr ail reng, garlamu i fod y cyntaf i dirio’r bêl. Cic gosb o flaen y pyst gan Carwyn ap ar ôl 23 munud ac un o bellter 7 munud yn ddiweddarach cyn i Wyn ( y bachwr) fod y cyntaf i ymateb i gic fer ymlaen a sgorio cais. Munud o’r hanner cyntaf oedd yn weddill pan lwyddodd cefnwr Yr Wyddgrug gario’r bêl ddigon i gyffwrdd y llinell mewn ymosodiad prin. Trosodd ei gais ei hun i roi sgôr o 7 – 21 ar yr hanner.
Wrth chwarae gyda’r awel ar ddechrau’r ail hanner, cafodd y tîm cartref gyfnod da. Gwelwyd cerdyn melyn i un chwaraewr o bob tîm am gan weithredu mewn ryciau. Yn araf ond yn bendant, daeth Nant yn ôl i’r gêm gan ennill pwynt bonws ar ôl 20 munud pan fu i’r asgellwr Aeron dderbyn y bêl a churo pedwar dyn wrth rasio am y linell. Nant oedd yn rheoli am y 10 munud olaf ac ni chaniatwyd cais wrth i’r blaenwyr hyrddio drosodd gan na allai’r Dyfarnwr, a gafodd gêm dda iawn, weld y bêl yn cael ei thirio. Cyrhaeddodd y cais olaf yn eiliad olaf y chwarae wrth i Grant unwaith eto gydlynu’n hynod ddeheuig o’r cefn a thirio ar y chwith. Sgôr derfynol o 7 – 31 felly!
Sadwrn nesaf, bydd y tîm Cyntaf yn chwarae I GARTREF yn erbyn PWLLHELI gyda’r ail dîm yn chwarae I FFWRDD yn erbyn PWLLHELI hefyd. Bydd yr Ieuenctid yn chwarae I FFWRDD yn ogystal yn erbyn CAERNARFON y tro hwn.
This match was the third ‘away’ one played by Nant at the beginning of the new season .Again it was lovely afternoon weather wise with a slight breeze blowing down the pitch’s slope. Nant began with a purpose and should have scored two tries in the opening minutes but the final pass went astray on both occasions. However, after 10 minutes, another attack was completed when Grant (full back) finished a move with a try on the left flank. The conversion attempt failed (as did all conversion attempts for Nant this afternoon!).
A quarter of the first half had elapsed when a poor defensive pass by Mold went astray and Iolo (no. 5) galloped to be the first to touch down for a try. A successful penalty in front of the posts by Carwyn ap after 23 minutes followed by a successful long distance one on the half hour mark before Wyn (Hooker) scored a try when he reacted quickly to a short punt over the defence. Only a minute of the first half was left when the Mold Full back stretched his arm to touch the line with the ball in a rare attack. Ho converted his own try to make a score of 7 – 21 at half time.
Mold began much brighter when playing down the slope with the breeze in the second half. One player from each side were ‘yellow carded’ for infringements in rucks. Slowly, but surely, Nant regained the upper hand and the ‘bonus point’ try after 20 minutes when, Aeron, the winger, collected the ball and beat four possible tacklers in a weaving run for the line. Nant were in complete control for the final 10 minutes and a ‘try’ was disallowed as the Referee (who had an excellent match) was unsighted when the pack shoved over the line .The final try arrived with the last play of the match when Grant again joined the back line in a purposeful manner to score a try on the extreme left.
Next Saturday, the first team will be playing AT HOME against PWLLHELI with the 2nd Team playing AWAY against the same opposition. The Youth team will also be AWAY – at CAERNARFON this time.

Caernarfon bow to Rhuthun power.
Caernarfon 12 v Rhuthun 13.
A perfect playing surface and a substantial crowd greeted both sides for this Friday evening Division 1 North Swalec League encounter at Parc Eirias. Before proceedings started a minute’s silence was respectfully recorded in memory of Mr Teifion Thomas, former Caernarfon Club Captain and North Wales District Referee who had sadly passed away earlier during the afternoon.
Rhuthun showed far more urgency and directness from the off, thus keeping the Cofis encamped in their own half for long periods. The pace of the backs became apparent early on and the Cofi scramble defence did well to prevent early scores. As a result of being forced to defend constantly, numerous penalties were conceded at the breakdown. Two early attempts dropped short of the mark before scrum half Deian Williams broke the deadlock from the twenty two midway through the half.
The pressure was maintained with the ball being spread wide at every opportunity, with one promising break being brought back due to a marginal forward pass.
Trystan Gwilym as acting captain in the notable absence of injured Rhys Evans rallied his young and lightweight pack and led a revival to the delight of the Cofi faithful. His quickly taken tap penalty resulted in a combination of a possible high or probable early tackle that saw the Rhuthun lock rather harshly sin binned.
From gaining a foothold in Rhuthun territory from the resultant touch finder, Caernarfon were finally able to put a few phases of play together and soon found themselves level when a well struck Kelvin Morris penalty sailed high between the uprights following a coming in from the wrong side offence.
Sadly the good work done and the limited attacking opportunities afforded them, was further thwarted when the restart failed to be gathered cleanly resulting in an offside player opting to field the ball. Rhuthun kicked for the corner to establish a decisive lineout that instigated a swift passing move that finally saw the Cofi try line being crossed. A clean take and one long looping miss pass in midfield freed full back Kyle Davies who crossed out wide for a well deserved five point lead.
Following this set back Caernarfon were immediately and sadly dealt another blow, as from the restart, acting number eight Ifan Jams was yellow carded for preventing an opposition forward from fielding the kick-off. Up to that point Jams has featured prominently, being industrious and robust throughout, likewise, Mathew Bohana at blindside had gained good hard yards. The lighter Cofi pack did well to survive until half time without conceding further points.
The Rhuthun coach had requested quicker recycling for the second forty minutes but it was the Cofis who found a new lease of life and started to ask questions of the Rhuthun rearguard. On gaining parity in one scrum a deliberate wheeling call gave Kelvin Morris his second three pointer, a sweetly struck effort from close to the halfway line.
Almost immediately Rhuthun should have extended their lead when a scintillating break by wing Huw Parry outfoxed all but one Cofi defender and when scoring would have been deemed easier he unexplainably lost control as attempting to ground the ball. Thankful for the let off, Caernarfon put together, probably, their best move, with the backs combining well until a chip ahead was chosen in favour of keeping the ball in hand.
However this afforded the Cofis a foothold back in Rhuthun’s twenty two and with the already high penalty count mounting it was to no ones surprise that an offside call gifted Morris a relatively easy penalty attempt by his high standards to edge Caernarfon ahead. Apparently oblivious to Morris’s fine vein of form Rhuthun once again fell foul of the referee by collapsing a scrum and midway through the second half found themselves, after having dominated or so long, five points adrift.
A tense final quarter was inevitable with one good interpassing move along the tramline helping the Cofis forward march. However an attempt to restrict Rhuthun gaining quick access, together with backchat, presented the blue and whites with what was a comparably easy penalty kick. Much to everyone’s surprise the effort drifted wide and they were denied minutes later when wing Iolo Hughes got a toe poke to the ball, a fraction before the oncoming centre was due to ground.
On returning to a previous offside call, the ball was drilled to the corner for a lineout drive to develop. Eventually the forwards crossed the try line but the grounding was inconclusive. Caernarfon summoned a heroic effort to disrupt the scrum and secure the ball, probably believing that the match had been won as a result.
However a further lapse of concentration meant a turnover that saw Rhuthun’s power play finally pay dividends with a sustained attack creating the impetus to creep ever closer to the Cofi try line and finally to the relief of the Rhuthun faithful see Shay Owen squeeze in between his opposing centres to gain a one point advantage.
Time was running out for the Cofis to mount a comeback but they summoned one courageous effort to camp on the opposition twenty two, only for effective replacement prop, Joe Simpson to be red carded for an apparent verbal malfunction and allow Rhuthun to clear their lines one last time and cherish a hard fought but fully deserved victory.
Caernarfon will head towards Blaenau Ffestiniog next Saturday to await another challenging encounter.

Ruthin continued their unbeaten run this season with a win over last year’s league champions Caernarfon in this contest between the WRU’s Hub Club teams at Eirias Park on Friday evening.
Ruthin started strongly and went ahead after 10 minutes with a penalty goal from scrum half Deian Lloyd.
Ruthin continued to have much of the possession and territory but Caernarfon’s defence was solid and after a Ruthin player was sin-binned Caernarfon’s centre Kelvin Morris evened the scores with a penalty goal.
The Blues immediately responded and from a line out in the Coffi’s half drove forward and passed the ball wide for centres Lewis Isaac and Shay Owen to combine and feed full back Kyle Davies who went over for a great try. Ruthin continued to have most of the territory but there was no further score before the break and the players went in with the score 8-3 to the Blues.
Caernarfon came out after the break in a more attacking mode but Ruthin defended well and although their try line never looked threatened they conceded three penalties within kicking distance of goal which Morris’s sure foot put over.
With Caernarfon 12-8 ahead the Blues began to play some great rugby and 10 minutes from time this paid off with a fine try by centre Shay Owen.
The Coffis went down to 14 men after an infringement and the scrums became uncontested but the scoreline remained the same and Ruthin went home happy after a well-deserved away win.

The RGC senior side made it three wins out of three in Division 1 East this season with a hard-fought win over a committed Ynysybwl side in a game whose outcome was in doubt right up until the final minutes.
It was the home side who started the brightest with their outside half, Nathan Ellis, kicking the ball deep into RGC territory at every opportunity and from this early pressure so Ellis had a chance to open the scoring but his penalty attempt sailed wide. A few minutes later Ellis' counterpart in the RGC side, Rhodri Carlton Jones, succeeeded where Ellis had failed and knocked over a penalty in front of the posts after the Ynysybwl mid-field had been caught off-side.
This was the signal for the RGC back-row of Andrew Williams, Tom Parry and Kelvin Davies to take over and following a couple of missed opportunities RGC scored the first try of the game when following a great turnover by Parry in the RGC 22 swift handling by Mareddyd Francis and Ben Stelmaszek took the ball into the Ynysybwl 22 and from the resulting possesion centre Mike Jones burst through the home defence to score his 3rd try in three games. Carlton-Jones added the extras and was similarly succesful 5 minutes later in converting his own try after Tom Parry had been held up short of the line.
Coming out at the beginning of the second-half with a 17-0 lead the RGC side might have thought they were heading for a simple win, but if they did they soon had to think again. From the re-start they were caught offside and although Ellis missed the three pointer they scored their first points a few minutes later when their dangerous winger Dale Stuckey beat off some weak tackling to touch-down under the posts.
Then shortly after Carlton-Jones missed with an attempted drop-goal, Ynysysbwl scored their second try of the game when centre Sean Ireland barrelled his way over from less than 10 metres out. With the conversion being added it was now only a three point difference that lay between the two sides.
Straight from the re-start RGC forced a turnover and although Tom Hughes was tackled just short of the whitewash the ball was swiftly re-cycled and full-back Llywarch Ap Myrddin scorched his way over to take the lead up to 8 one that was soon extended to 10 by Carlton-Jones as he slotted over the conversion.
Although Ynysysbwl were to pull that back through another penalty the visitors had the final say with Carlton Jones second penalty of the day.
Speaking after the game RGC Head Coach Chris Horsman said:
'To win our opening three games in Division 1 East would have been a massive achievement in it's own right but to win all three on the road makes it an even bigger one. Ynysysybwl gave us a real challenge today and when they pulled to within three points they began to ask serious questions about the character of the team. The fact that we responded so well shows just how strong that character is. As ever captain Kelvin Davies put his body on the line for us today but it was again a great team effort from the entire squad. '
Asked how it felt to be sitting on top of the Division 1 East table, Horsman replied:
'Whilst you cant't win the League in September you can certainly lose it and as I have already said it is fantastic to have won our first 3 matches. However we still have another 19 games to play in what is going to be a long and hard season. We have got our first home game next week at Parc Eirias which is something we are all looking forward to and I really hope that the North Wales rugby public come out in force to give the boys the support they deserve.'
Next Saturday's game v Tredegar kicks off at 5.30pm.
