Mold Youth 9 v Merthyr Youth 27
The first ten minutes or so of this tense affair saw both sides sounding out each other with most of the play in the Mold half. The Young Gogs were dealt a hammer blow after 13 and 15 minutes of the half when Merthyr scored two excellent tries, both converted, to sweep in to a 14-0 lead. Rhys Walker scored both tries, with Liam Jones converting both.
It was on the half hour mark that Mold had their first real chance of points, a difficult penalty which Mold full-back, Jack Martin, slotted over with ease.
On the stroke of half-time Merthyr scored the last of the first half points with a well-worked try, scored by number eight Robson Blake.
Mold got off to a dream start in the second half with a penalty score in the first minute, again kicked by Jack Martin, but from the re-start, infringed and allowed Merthyr to score again with a penalty of their own, again kicked by Liam Jones.
Merthyr's defence was solid throughout and although Mold enjoyed their fair share of possession they rarely looked like scoring tries. After eight minutes of the half, Mold kicked their third penalty of the game to bring the scores to 22-9 and give a glimmer of hope for a comeback.
The boys from South Wales, however, had other ideas and withstood everything that Mold could throw at them and when full-back, Josh Fly, scored Merthyr's fourth try to make it 27-9 after almost half an hour of the half, the stuffing was knocked out of a plucky Mold side.
Merthyr ended worthy winners having scored four tries to nil but they were given a severe test by the boys from Mold, whose never-say-die attitude, will have earned them a lot of admirers from amongst the visitor's ranks.
