Flint 10 v Newtown 31
Flint welcomed Newtown to Cae-Y-Castell for yet another league first between these two clubs after Newtown's relegation from Division 2 last season, but as with Wrexham last week, Newtown proved to be a tough opposition for a young Flint side, as they went away with a deserved win 10 - 31 scoring five tries to Flint's one.
Flint started the game well enough, with the forwards recycling quick ball and supporting well in loose play, but with their backs not quite finding their form so far this season and missing influential full back Richie Williams (who's moved to division 2 outfit Abergele this week) had left a question mark at full back, Ryan Beck stepped into that role from the wing and did a excellent job, so much so Beck was Flint " Man of the Match," after 4 try saving tackles, some penetrating runs and showing good hands to pick up a difficult pass to score Flint‘s only try late on in the second half.
The Flint pack showed improvement at the line out, ruck and loose play, but with the lack of experience and weight they struggled at scrum time. Despite this captain Mitch Martin showed strength and skill with the scrum going backwards, managed to pick up, take on the opposition and provided his scrum-half with the stable ball.
Flint’s other points came from the boot of fly half Damian Goss who kicked a penalty and a conversion with an average age of 21 this young Flint side is improving and learning fast but unfortunately at the experience of league games hopefully they will be rewarded for their efforts with a win next week, when they welcome Welshpool to Cae-Y-Castell for another home game.
FLINT RFC would also like to extend condolences to the family of Teifion Thomas and all at Caernarfon RFC. Teifion was a former player and captain of Caernarfon RFC, had been their Youth Team coach and a coach at RGC 1404 age grades. Teifion was also a well respected North Wales Referee.

Rhosllanerchrugog 2nds 11 v Colwyn Bay 2nds 8
Bay 2s travelled to Rhos Wrexham on Saturday in Round 2 of this season’s Clwyd league competition and just fell short in an even game where tries were shared one each and the difference was the second penalty the home side converted in the 30th minute
The visitors opened the scoring with a penalty from centre Lee Tetlow but Rhos stormed back with a try wide out from wing Craig West. Two penalties were slotted by Rhos fly half Vince Oakley before bay centre Brett Jones weaved through a number of weak tackles to unselfishly offload just short to wing Rob Norman who went over to make the scores 11 – 8 to Rhos at half time.
Despite much effort by both sides in the second half neither managed to score but Rhos were able to hold on to a game much enjoyed by all who took part. Colwyn Bay 2s face Abergele 2s next Saturday at home.

Colwyn Bay Youth 23 v Rhyl Youth 22
The Bay Youth began the 2012-2013 league season with a narrow victory beating a tough Rhyl side who would feel disappointed to lose this match having built a comfortable lead only to lose it in the last minutes of the game.
The home side started brightly, dictating and controlling the game but showed defensive frailties when put under pressure.Rhyl opened the scoring with a penalty and the home side went further behind when the visitors scored a converted try.
The Bay did not capitalise on their chances to narrow the lead by missing a kickable penalty and opted for a quick tap but unfortunately spilled the ball to turn possession over to the visitors whose pack started to assert their dominance at the set-pieces and where they won good ball for their backs to use.
The Bay’s defence on their own try line was heroic with the visitors creating numerous chances to extend the lead but No.8 Lloyd Jones’s try saving tackle and then dragging the Rhyl player up to the 5m line inspiring the rest of the side and trail by seven points going into the interval with fly-half Pat Atkinson slotting over a late penalty.
Rhyl continued their dominance into the second period scoring an early try though their impressive back division.Pat Atkinson replied with a penalty but the visitors powered their way back by scoring a well worked try to lead by a healthy margin going into the last quarter.
The visitors pack tired towards the later stages of the match and gaps appeared in their defence,Lloyd Jones who carried the ball well all afternoon breached the weakening defence and scythed his way through into the 22 to offload to Pat Atkinson who crossed to score his side’s first try. This restored belief and The Bay’s inexperienced players responded by combining with the senior members of the squad to set-up an exciting finale.
Rhyl’s discipline faltered and Pat Atkinson converted an important penalty to trail by six points with five minutes to play.
With momentum favouring the home side they continued to pressurise deep in their opponents territory and man of the match centre Jordan Sheridan broke a couple of weak tackles to score under the posts for Pat Atkinson to add the winning extras.Unfortunately this was to be the centre’s last contribution of the match because of an ankle injury which left the home side with 14 players to play the remaining two minutes of the match.
The Bay survived a tense and nervous couple of minutes to seal an excellent winning start to the campaign.

Colwyn Bay U12's 21 vs Caernarfon U12’s 45
The first match of the new season saw the visitors from Caernarfon kick off in traditionally blustery conditions. Colwyn Bay’s team had been reduced by injuries and absence and the Caernarfon coach sportingly agreed to a 12 a side match.
Caernarfon raced into a 24 point lead in the first 20 minutes with 3 converted tries and a penalty kick. Rhys Jones’ and Celt Evans’ tries were particularly eye catching individual efforts down the left wing. They extended their lead with a converted Huw Evans try on 22 minutes. With just 3 minutes left in the half, the Bay woke up and put increasing pressure on the Caernarfon line but were repelled by some stout defending.
After half time, Caernarfon once again scored first with Morgan Jones diving over. Bay coach Peter Ryan had stern words to say during the conversion kick and the Bay responded with more aggressive tackling and pressure on the Caernarfon line from both forwards and backs. A try by Tom Brooke put the Bay’s first points of the match on the board on 40 minutes after sustained pressure by forwards and backs in a number of phases of possession.
Caernarfon responded four minutes later with another score. The Bay scored again through Tom Brooke’s interception at the lineout and sprint to the line. Colwyn Bay finished the match with Brooke completing his hat trick after a scrappy Caernarfon lineout had spilled the ball over their own line due to pressure from Bay’s forwards. This had been a compelling game played in good spirit under worsening conditions and watched by a good crowd of chilly parents! Well done to both sides.
