Rhyl 2nds 24 v Abergele 2nds 15
Two tries from Joe Warhurst set Mike Potter's side up for an opening victory of the season. Joe opened the scoring then added with a second try ran in from the Rhyl 22. Evergreen flanker Geezer Davies scored his customary try against Gele and newcomer Jonathan Kelly put the icing on the cake with a great breakaway try from the half way line - the first of many this season. Youth team prodigy Simon Evans kicked his 2 out of 2 conversions.
Man of the match had to go to Wez Hancocks for an all round great performance at flyhalf, his running, passing and kicking game were all spot on, although he was run close to the wire by Chris Fell-Crook who looked odds on to score a fifth try for Rhyl after a sparkling run which was only stopped short by a tremendous tackle.
Rhyl will look to extend their sequence of success at home to Shotton this coming Saturday.
Picture is of Jonathan Kelly making a break for the try line.

Dinbych U15s 28 points v Rhuthun U15s 12 points
Sunday 9 September 2012
Dinbych’s Under 15s kicked off their 2012-13 season with a hard fought 28-12 win over neighbours Rhuthun. Full back Gruff Roberts scored two tries and added three excellent conversion kicks to contribute 16 points to Dinbych’s tally with Brad Reid and James Fisher-Jones also crossing for tries and Josh Morris adding a conversion.
Dinbych started strongly and took an early lead when centre Reid ran in from the Rhuthun 10 metre line. Morris’s conversion secured the extras. The home side then extended their lead as Roberts received a pass inside his own half from a line out move and broke away through the visitor’s defence to score under the posts. He added the conversion to give Dinbych a 14-0 lead.
Rhuthun responded strongly and started mounting attacks using their well organised scrum as a platform. Dinbych found themselves under siege in their own 22 metre zone and eventually a well worked moved saw Rhuthun’s wing cross on the right flank for an unconverted try. The score remained 14-5 at the interval.
Rhuthun started the second half with greater purpose and were rewarded when their fly half broke through for a second visiting try. The conversion closed the scores to 14-12. The visitors continued to press and came close to taking the lead as they crossed under the posts. Desperate Dinbych defending however prevented the ball from being grounded.
Dinbych came back into the game and the strong running James Fisher-Jones crashed over for a try five metres in from the right touchline. Gruff Roberts’ conversion attempt was perfectly struck and restored Dinbych’s lead to 21-12.
As the game neared a close, Roberts made sure of the victory. Some excellent interplay in the backs saw Roberts receive the ball on the right wing. He broke through a couple of tackles and raced away to cross for his second try. Again despite a difficult angle, his conversion attempt was well executed and took the score at 28-12. The two teams continued to contest the game to the final whistle but no further scores resulted.
This was a satisfying result against very tough opponents. Whilst Dinbych’s coaches were impressed with the team performance including some strong defensive work by the forwards and much flair in the backs, there were several areas for improvement that will need to be worked on.
The U15s do not have a fixture this Sunday but travel to Mold on Sunday 23 September.
