Report by Rob Griffiths of the Daily Post on how Porthmadog are gearing themselves up for a new challenge after joining Division Three North next season.
Having finished second in the Gwynedd League in the last campaign behind Caernarfon seconds, Port make the step up to the national league having been given permission by the WRU, where they are aiming for at least a top half finish.
“It’s a new challenge for us as a club,” said back-row and committee member Ioan Gwilym. “We are quietly confident of doing well. We were second in the Gwynedd League last season where a few injuries and absentees cost us towards the end.
“We had the chance to go up last year, but decided to turn it down and try and get a few more players in and let them gel a bit more as a team, which seems to have worked for us.
“It’s another challenge for us. The club itself wasn’t going for a few years, and only really started up again in 2007. But we have got the club up and going again and we are getting the community involved and from what we have gathered a lot of clubs in the area are happy we are going again.”
However, Port are making an appeal for new players, as well as advertising for a new forwards coach.
Training starts on Tuesday, July 3 at Madog Sports Centre in Porthmadog, where all newcomers are more than welcome to try their hand.
“We are a friendly club, everyone gets on with everyone,” added Gwilym. “We are looking for a few more players to come down and try out with us. You don’t have to have played rugby before, and anyone can come down and have a try really.”
