Ruthin 10 v Nant Conwy 25
Following report kindly supplied by Ruthin RFC
Ruthin were knocked off the top of Division 1 North after Saturday’s match at Caeddol which Nant won with a bonus point.
As in previous matches this season the Blues took some time to get going in the first half and an efficient Nant team took advantage and were 20-0 up at half time. For the first 30 minutes virtually all the play was in the Blues half and although the pack continues its good performance this season loose play away from the set pieces allowed Nant to dominate.
The visitors kicked a penalty goal and then went over for two unconverted tries in the first 25 minutes and then a Blues kick in their own 22 was charged down and Nant got a 3rd.
At 20-0 down the Blues spurred into action and spent the last 10 minutes battering the Nant try line but the effort came to nothing and the whistle blew after the ball was over the try line but judged to be held up. Ruthin continued their attack in the second half and after a great drive the ball was over the Nant try line but again was judged to be held up.
From the resultant scrum centre Shay Owen finally got some points on the board for the home team with an unconverted try. In contrast to the first half play after the break was virtually all in Nant’s half.
The Blues had set piece after set piece within 10 yards of the Nant line but could not convert the effort against a solid Nant defence until 10 minutes from the end the pack pushed over for a second try with hooker Garry Teeson touching down.
Nant pushed into the Blues half and after a fracas near the touchline on the Blues 22 were awarded a scrum in front of the posts from which they scored giving them the winner’s bonus point.
Although the Blues continued in the attack for the last few minutes they could make no further headway and the game finished with Nant winning 25-10. Next week the Blues are away to newly promoted Dolgellau.

Bala 16 v Caernarfon 17.
Ychydig feddyliodd y medrai Y Cofis ddod nol i ennill y gem hon gan fod Bala wedi bod yn feistr yn y chwarae rhydd am gyfnod hir. ‘Roedd dycnwch pac Bala i’w ganmol yn fawr gyda Ilan Rowlands yn arwain trwy esiampl fel erioed.
Troed George Davies rodd Bala dri phwynt ar y blaen o fewn munudau o’r dechrau, cyn i ymosodiad cyntaf Caernarfon ddod a chais i’r canolwr Dafydd Roberts yn dilyn lledu’r bel a’r amddiffyn o gornel i gornel. Llwyddodd Kelvin Morris gyda’r trosiad.
Cyfres o ddewisiadau anghywir rodd Y Cofis eu hunain dan bwysau gyda rhediad cryf Rhydian Jones yn canfod bwlch ar yr asgell i roi Bala ar y blaen. Ar derfyn yr hanner camgymeriadau tebyg rodd gyfle i Bala ymestyn ei mantais gyda’r canolwr Owain Aled yn torri trwodd i sgorio cais hwylus o ran y Cofis. Yn anffodus methodd y trosiad, fel yn wir nifer o giciau cosb, i gadw y sgor o fewn cyrraedd Y Cofis ar yr hanner.
Diflas oedd arlwy yr ail hanner am gyfnod hir gyda anaf y dyfarnwr yn golygu sawl seibiant yn y chwarae. Mentrodd y Cofis wneud nifer o newidiadau ac o’r eiliadau hynny llwyddwyd i ofyn mwy o gwestiynnau o amddiffyn Bala. Arweiniodd un rhediad cryf yn y canol at driphwynt o droed Lance Owen ond cyn i’r dathlu lonyddu ‘roedd Bala wedi adfer ei mantais drwy gic gosb Huw John Roberts.
Yn ystod y ddwy funud olaf cliriodd Bala o’i dwy ar hugain ond cafwyd gwrth ymosod cryf gyda Iolo Hughes ar yr asgell, gan ennill tir sylweddol. Dwylo sydyn Bryn Granville fel eilydd wrth fon y pac a’r bytholwyrdd Trystan Gwilym bellach fel maswr rodd y cyfle i Lance Owen groesi am ei ail o’r dydd. ‘Roedd trosiad digon anodd yn ei wynebu ond o fod wedi magu hyder ‘roedd yr anel yn gywir a thorrwyd calon y tim cartref yn y fan ar lle.
Ni lwyddodd Bala i drafferthu yr amddiffyn yn ormodol yn dilyn hynny a chipiodd Caernarfon fuddugoliaeth fain heb chwarae ei brand arferol o rygbi deniadol.
Bala 16 v Caernarfon 17.
Caernarfon scraped through by the skin of their teeth to claim the points in this tense but often lack-lustre and error ridden Division 1 North Swalec match.
Bala were buoyant after their good home win over Rhuthun a week ago and started brightly to put pressure on the Cofi defence. They found themselves three points to the good within as many minutes with George Davies converting a well-struck penalty. Caernarfon however responded with a sweeping move following a good lineout take, drawing the defence from one side to the other and thus allowing centre Dafydd Roberts to collect a bouncing ball and breach the cover to score. Kelvin Morris added the conversion.
Sadly that one move proved to be the highlight of the first half as far as the Cofis were concerned with numerous laboured attacks being dealt with confidently by Bala. Often loosing ball in contact to the workmanlike Bala back row, ably led by Ilan Rowlands was soon to be rued.
Wrong decisions also meant that Caernarfon were often putting themselves under pressure and it was fortunate that a number of kickable penalties were not capitalised upon by Bala to enable them to draw clear. A loose kick however was pounced upon to give Bala a foothold in Caernarfon’s twenty two and crisp passing coupled with strong running by Rhydian Jones saw him cross the line for Bala to gain the lead by a single point.
With half time beckoning Bala’s pressure earned just reward, when from a scrummage out wide centre Owain Aled brushed aside would-be tacklers to score close to the posts and grant Bala a six point advantage.
Much of the second half was a tedious uninspiring affair with the referee’s leg muscle injury granting the players extra periods of rest. However, with the introduction of players off the bench, the pace of Caernarfon’s game finally upped. Bryn Granville, introduced at scrum half worked well in tandem with vibrant Trystan Gwilym at standoff and Bala’s defence for once was put under pressure.
Two well controlled scrums edged the Cofis closer to the try line and nearly brought reward before the referees whistle offered Bala an opportunity to clear their lines. However the long downfield kick afforded one other counterattack with wing Iolo Hughes gaining ground before quick recycling enabled opposite wing Lance Owen enough of a gap for his burning pace to seize the opportunity and score. All held their breath as Owen himself fired the conversion from distance and to the delight of the Caernarfon faithful it sailed through the uprights to record the most slender of victories.
Next week Bethesda await, a side who to date have not had the best of results but facing local rivals should be inspiration enough to ensure another yet another tough encounter.
