Pwllheli 10 v 11 Bala
(h/t 3 - 8)
A sunny afternoon, a firm pitch and a cold breeze plus two skillful and determined sides produced an exciting match which could have been won by either side. Both teams attacked and defended with aplomb and there were also plenty of errors and incorrect decisions.
When Bala's outside half Owain Aled converted a penalty after sixteen minutes play, the home side had had most of the territorial advantage but Bala counter-attacked on several occasions. Two minutes later, Owain Williams levelled the score with his first attempt at goal.
Play continued in the same vein throughout the half interrupted by a try from the visitors when a penalty was allowed to be taken quickly three times, gaining forty metres, with prop Alwyn Dylan completing the charge to the line. The conversion was missed.
The second half was played in similar fashion, Bala winning a penalty which was converted by Owain Aled after fourteen minutes whilst twenty minutes later Pwllheli winger John Pugh cut through the Bala defence and raced clear to score his first try for the senior side. Williams converted to bring the home side within a point of the visitors at 10 - 11.
A dynamic pereformance by both teams but Bala's organisation and committment won the day.

Gwelwyd ysbryd cymunedol Dyffryn Ogwen ar ei orau pan ddaeth cannoedd i Dôl Ddafydd i gefnogi Gerallt Jones sydd yn dal yng Nghanolfan Walton yn dilyn yr ymosodiad creulon arno fo. Diolch i bawb ddaeth draw i gefnogi.
Yr ymwelwyr ddechreuodd orau gan sorio cais drwy Davies ar ôl chwarter awr o'r gêm. Atebodd Bethesda 5 munud yn ddiweddarach pan sgoriodd Mathew Parry gais unigol gwych a chiciodd y pwyntiau ychwanegol. Ciciodd Bagshaw gôl gosb i Landundo ac wedyn, ar yr hanner awr, aeth yr asgellwr chwith Gregson yn glir i'r gornel a gwnaeth trosiad Bagshaw y sgôr yn 15 pwynt i 7 i'r ymwelwyr.
Roedd Llandudno yn dangos llawer mwy o awch na'r tîm cartref ac yn chwarae rygbi syml effeithiol. Foddbynnag, yn dilyn pwysau gan flaenwyr Bethesda, ildiodd Llandudno 2 gôl gosb yn hwyr yn yr hanner gan roi'r tîm cartref ar ei hôl hi o 2 bwynt ar y toriad.
Bethesda reolodd yr ail hanner wrth i'r ymwelwyr flino a dioddef nifer o anafiadau. Foddbynnag, ni chafwyd sgôr tan y 29ain munud pan ddangosodd y canolwr Ben Stelmaszek gryn gyflymdra i hollti amddiffyn Llandudno a sgorio yn y cornel.
Ychydig funudau yn ddiweddarach, ciciodd Parry gôl adlam i'r tîm cartref ac yna ychwanegodd Stelmaszek gais arall i sicrhau'r fuddugoliaeth a oedd yn edrych yn bur anhebyg ar brydiau.
Bydd Bethesda i ffwrdd yn Rhuthun yr wythnos nesaf.

Dyffryn Ogwen's community spirit was seen at it's best when hundreds came down to Dôl Ddafydd in support of Gerallt Jones who was cruelly assaulted and is still at the Walton Centre in Liverpool. Thanks to you all for your support.
The visitors started the better of the two sides when D Davies scored a try after 15 minutes play. Bethesda replied 5 minutes later through a fine individual try from Mathew Parry who also added the extras. Bagshaw then gave Llandudno the lead from a penalty, and on the half hour, Gregson scored a fine try in the left hand corner and Bagshaw's conversion made the score 15 points to 7 to the visitors.
Llandudno had the edge throughout the first half and were playing simple effective rugby. However, Bethesda's forwards exerted enough pressure late on in the half to force 2 penalty kicks to make the margin 2 points in favour of the visitors at half time.
Bethesda controlled play for most of the second half as the visitors tired and suffered a spate of injuries. However, it took Bethesda 29 minutes to score their first points of the half. They came from centre Ben Stelmaszek who showed a fine turn of speed to split the defence and score a great try in the corner.
Some minutes later, Parry dropped a goal for the home side and then Stelmaszek scored his second try to seal a victory that looked far from certain for a considerable time.
Bethesda are away at Ruthin next Saturday.

Llangefni 7 v 49 Caernarfon
Forty minutes of champagne rugby placed Caernarfon firmly in the driving seat in this match and on becoming aware of Nant Conwy’s loss at home are now odds on to retain the Division One North Title.
The number of passes completed during the first half was high but the addition of good timing and placing made it a difficult afternoon for the Cefni defence. On eight minutes a Trystan Gwilym break led to the ball flowing at pace via five pairs of hands with the final inside pass finding flanker Andrew Williams who stormed to the try line. Minutes later a quick tap saw Captain Rhys Evans crossing the gain line before Gwilym Jones drove forward and found fellow centre Dafydd Roberts at hand to cross the whitewash. At this point, there was no rest bite for Cefni and the third try soon followed midway through the half when another scrumhalf break saw the towering Andrew Williams at hand to touch down yet again.
To Cefni’s credit they responded by keeping the ball tight and a sustained period of forward pressure was close to bringing just reward when sadly fly half Llyr Hughes was red carded for overzealous use of the boot at a ruck. Consequently, the Cofis task became easier and minutes later following a Sion Gwyn break the ball was fed wide for wing Lance Owen to outpace the defence and score a deserved try. Shortly afterwards Lance was again causing havoc amongst the Cefni defence and despite the good marshalling of Iwan Davies he found Dafydd Roberts on the inside to add another five pointer.
The spectators envisaged a continuous flurry of Cofi points in the second half but to Cefni’s credit, the fourteen were galvanised by the work ethic of number eight Iestyn Dafydd and the youthful promise of Iwan Roberts at centre. With Gareth Pawson and Emyr Williams to the fore amongst the forwards Cefni were able to stem the tide. With less quick ball becoming available, a speculative downfield kick paid dividends for the Cofis when the presence and quick thinking of wing Dylan Parry caused confusion in Cefni’s ranks leading to a hack on and gather being grounded beneath the uprights. Finally, Cefni secured a try of their own when the Cofis attempted to run out of defence. On harassing the centres, Iestyn Dafydd picked up and drove from the resulting ruck to score. Carwyn Milburn duly slotted the conversion.
Late replacements like Mathew Bohana proved that Caernarfon had strength in depth, a factor that should aid their final drive towards the title. At the death, Lance Owen whose pace and hunger had been evident throughout was found on the inside shoulder and duly split the Cefni defence to sprint clear and score.
A special mention is reserved for Kelvin Morris at standoff who succeeded to maintain a 100% kicking record by converting all of the seven tries and steered the game well throughout.
Next Saturday, Caernarfon will host Bro Ffestiniog, in yet another potential title decider.

Bro aeth ar y blaen gyda chic gosb gan Barry ar ôl 9 munud ond ymatebwyd yn union yr un modd i Nant funud yn ddiweddarach gan Carwyn ap. Ar ôl pwyso parhaus ar linell Bro, daeth cais Nant trwy’r bachwr Eryl pan wthiwyd ef trosodd gan weddill y pac. Troswyd y cais gan Carwyn ap i roi Nant 10 - 3 ar y blaen ar yr hanner.
Roedd 18 munud o’r ail hanner wedi’i chwarae pan fu i bas hir i’r asgellwr Steven guro amddiffyn Nant a sgoriwyd cais i Bro yn y gornel a throswyd y cais gan Barry i roi sgôr gyfartal. Ar ôl 27 munud, bu i Carwyn ap, gicio cic gosb yn llwyddiannus o tua 45 medr i roi Nant ar y blaen. Bu i chwaraewr yr un o’r ddwy ochr dderbyn cerdyn melyn a phan roedd Bro i lawr i 14 dyn, sgoriwyd cais tebyg iawn i’r cyntaf gan yr ymwelwyr ond mai’r Cefnwr, Ian Ellis a diriodd y tro hwn. Unwaith eto, methwyd a throsi. Bu sawl cyfle i’r ddwy ochr ennill y gêm wedi hynny ond o blaid yr ymwelwyr yr aeth y fuddugoliaeth yn diwedd yn dilyn gêm arall ardderchog i’w gwylio.
Bydd NANT yn chwarae I FFWRDD yn erbyn Y BALA nesaf ar brynhawn Sadwrn 21ain IONAWR 2012 mewn gêm gynghrair gyda’r gic gyntaf am 2.30 o’r gloch.
This was another match between two equal teams in every respect. The result could have gone either way at the end!. Bro went ahead with a successful penalty kick by Barry after 9 mimutes but Nant replied in a similar manner in the next minute when Carwyn ap (no. 15) converted a penalty kick. After a succession of mauls on the Bro line. Hooker, Eryl was pushed over for a try by the rest of the pack. Carwyn ap converted to give Nant a 10 – 3 lead at half time.
Eighteen minutes of the second half had been played when a long pass to the right winger beat the home defence and winger Steven scored a try in the corner. Barry converted to make the scores even at 10 each. After 27 minutes, Carwyn ap kicked a superb penalty from about 45 metres to give Nant the lead. Both sides had a player each yellow carded and whilst down to 14 players, Bro scored a very similar try to their first but that it was full back, Ian Ellis who touched down this time. The conversion attempt failed. Both sides had their opportunities to win the match but the victory went to the visitors after a highly entertaining match to the good crowd who watched the game!
NANT’s next match is an AWAY game against Y BALA on Saturday afternoon, 21st January 2012 in a League match with the kick off at 2.30 p.m.

MOLD 20 v RUTHIN 15
Ruthin were visiting Mold for the second time this season having lost narrowly 6-5 in the last encounter.
Both sides needed a win – Ruthin to draw away from the relegation zone and Mold to drag themselves out of it. Mold started strongly and with good running and organisation were putting the Blues defence to the test.
The home side missed the opportunity to go ahead with an early penalty goal attempt but within ten minutes got their first try which was converted.
Ruthin were not helping themselves by some loose kicking and although the play was not all one-sided it was Mold that went further ahead. Their wing intercepted a try in the Ruthin half and ran the length of the pitch and although fullback Shay Owen gave chase and tackled a great offload from the tackle led to the try.
The Blues clearly decided that at 14-0 down they had better start playing and after enormous pressure on the home sides line with some excellent scrummaging scrum half Rhys Hughes nipped over for a try. Mold missed a penalty goal attempt and the teams huddled for half time with the home side 14-5 up.
The Blues started the second half as they finished the first but it took some time for them to wear the Mold defence down but after 20 minutes the pressure paid off and wing Huw Sharples ran over for the Blues second try which fly half Wil Davies converted.
Ruthin seemed on a roll and within minutes Davies had put them 15-14 ahead with a penalty goal. With a win in sight and the teams tiring after a game at full pace for 80 minutes both sides were conceding penalties and it was Mold that took the advantage by slotting over two penalties.
The Blues ended the game again pressuring the Mold line but conceded a penalty and the whistle blew with the final score 20-15 to Mold and a losers bonus point to Ruthin.

Colwyn Bay 0 v Dolgellau 23
Colwyn Bay's topsy turvey season continued as they went down at the hands of Dolgellau leaders of Division 2 (North) and almost certainly put paid to any hopes that third placed Club had of a top two finish with a comfortable away win.
The Bay started the season with a good home record winning all four games at home of their opening seven games while stuggling to win away from home losing all three, but in the next seven games they have failed to win at home but managed three wins on the road and this form continued last Saturday.
Visiting Full back Tom Roberts kicked a brace of first half goals before adding a try, two conversions and a penaty in the second period to seal the points with replacement wing Tristan Evans completed the scroing with a late try for the visitors.

Welshpool 13 v Llangollen 8
A penalty after 10 minutes gave Pool the lead on a bitterly cold afternoon at Maesydre. The visitors hit back with a penalty of their own after 15 minutes to bring the scores level.
Aggressive in both defence and attack, Pool put in one of their best performances of the season and their domination was rewarded with a try under the posts from prop Ben Aldis, converted by Daley Jones to give a scoreline of 10-3.
Early play in the second half saw Pool spending large amount of time in the opposition half. However, for all the possession, their only reward was a penalty after 10 minutes of the half which Daley Jones narrowly missed. Jones was not to be denied five minutes later when he coolly slotted over a further penalty to give a scoreline of 13-3.
The hosts should have stretched their lead further as the game was played in the Llangollen half but some great defence by the visitors prevented a further score which would have released some of the tension that Welshpool were displaying.
With 48 minutes of the half played, Llangollen's never-say-die performance gained them a valuable bonus point as they powered over for an unconverted try with the last move of the game to give a final scoreline of 13-8.

Aberbargoed 17 vs Llandrindod Wells 10
Aberbargoed 17 v Llandrindod Wells 10
Llandrindod started this match at pace, bewildering a sleepy opposition in the first ten minutes, and scoring their only try of the match when Geraint Evans touched down after a period of loose play, Mathew Williams converting.
This, unfortunately, was a good as it got for the visitors as, from the re-start, a mis-judged Llandrindod clearance kick gave Aberbargoed possession, and a clear run to the posts only to be brought down just short, though good offensive work by the Aberbargoed forwards pushed them over for a try by Niall Todd, conversion from Alwyn Davies.
Llandrindod still managed to gain territory, though an infringement cost them a penalty, kicked by Davies. Right on half-time Llandrindod evened the scoreline with a penalty of their own, kicked this time by Paul Harris.
Though mainly dominant in the forwards in the second half, Llandrindod's backs were unable to capitalise and further random and mis-aimed kicking cost them dear, giving away hard won territory and causing all sorts of frantic defensive moves to counter Aberbargoed's powerful backs. One of these kicks led to Aberbargoed's second try, by Erwin Edwards,
conversion again by Davies.
Not content with running out winners in points, Aberbargoed also were ahead of Llandrindod 3-1 in the Yellow Card competition in a match littered with penalties, and some dangerous play.
This week, Llandrindod host Llanrumney in the League.

COLWYN BAY 2NDS 10 v RHYL 2NDS 25
Winter relented on a cold still sunny afternoon at Brookfield Drive to enable the Bay 2nds to play their first game for eight weeks but visitors Rhyl proved too strong up front for them and they ran out victors 5 tries (none converted) to one converted try and penalty from the home side.
The first half saw a stale mate until just short of half time when Rhyl full back Stuart Fell-Cook scored the first of his three tries when he ran through some weak tackles to touch down out wide to see the visitors 5 – nil up at half time.
Strong running from the visitors’ backs saw them add three further tries (two from Fell-Cook and the third from fly half Wes Williams) before the reliable boot of Bay fly half Henry Morris slotted a penalty. Again the Fell-Cook family hit the score line when brother Chris scored their fifth and final try before the committed and never-say-die spirit of the home side saw them get their only try of the match when skipper and talisman No 8 Dean Henson broke through from wide out on one of his many rampaging runs of the day.
The Bay lads have a tough task next week when they visit league co-favourites Mold but with spirit and enthusiasm this strong, they may yet give their favoured opponents a scare or two.

Colwyn Bay Youth 23 v Wrexham Youth 0
The Bay entertained Wrexham in this league and cup double header and the second half performance secured the victory with replacement left-winger Lewis Stockton scoring a hat-trick of tries. The two sides were playing their first game for two months due to the weather and the Christmas lay-off rustiness was evident in both sides play but the visitors settled into their game early and were unfortunate not to take the lead by narrowly failing to convert a penalty and full-back Harry Donegan’s try saving tackle.
Midway through the first period fly-half Pat Atkinson opened his side’s account by successfully converting a penalty after Wrexham had failed to stay on their feet at the ruck on their 22m.Both sides struggled to dominate and an interesting second half lay in prospect.
An enforced substitution early in the second half changed the course of the game when inside centre Jordan Sheridan had to be replaced due to a knee injury by Lewis Stockton. With the visitors camped in The Bay 5m and with their forwards pressurising the home try-line the Wrexham pack lost control of the ball and it popped out of the side of the blind side of the ruck where the alert Bay No.8 Lloyd Jones passed it to Lewis Stockton to run virtually the length of the field to score the opening try which was converted by Pat Atkinson.
The visitors continued to pressurise but could not capitalise by opportunities created by them with The Bay defence forcing too many errors even when the home side were down to 14 players with the sin-binning of right-winger Ethan Morris.Tactical substitutions in the second half paid dividends with replacement blind-side flanker Jack Foster’s strength at the contact area turning numerous balls over to his side’s advantage.
As the half progressed the home side asserted their dominance and No.8 Lloyd Jones was unfortunate that his pick-up from the scrum on the opposition 5m line was judged to have been held-up but from the resulting scrum substitute scrum-half Arthur Astbury passed to his No.10 who offloaded to Lewis Stockton to scorein the corner.Entering the last quarter the visitors were frustrated that their forwards were working hard and their back division could not penetrate the home defence.
Pat Atkinson scored another penalty to extend the lead and the final nail in the coffin was hammered home when Wrexham had made a last effort to restore pride in themselves, when close to the home side’s try line they attempted spread the ball on the blind side but the live-wire Lewis Stockton intercepted the pass to sprint the length of the pitch to score.
The victory showed the importance of being able to field a strong squad and numerous candidates were named for man of the match which eventually went to captain Sam Ryan.
