Sgorwyr / Scorers:
Nant Conwy: Ceisiau/Tries: ELGAN DAVIES (1), CARWYN ELLIS (1), ERYL JONES (1) & CARWYN ap MYRDDIN (1)
Trosi / Conversions: CARWYN ap MYRDDIN (4)
Caernarfon: Cais / Try : DYLAN GWYN (1)
Dechreuodd Nant ar dân gan fygwth llinell Caernarfon o’r funud gyntaf. Yn wir, bu i’r bel gael ei tharo ymlaen ddwywaith pan oedd y cefnwyr mewn safle da i sgorio cyn i’r Capten, Elgan dawelu’r nerfau a thirio am y cais cyntaf ar ôl 12 munud. Bu i Carwyn ap drosi’r cyntaf o’r pedwar ymgais debyg.
Saith munud yn ddiweddarach, yn dilyn symudiad ar hyd y llinell gan y cefnwyr tiriodd Carwyn ap (rhif 15) ger y pyst a throsodd ei gais ei hun. Daeth Caernarfon fwy i’r gêm ar ôl hyn heb ymddangos eu bod yn bygwth llawer. Roedd yn amlwg o weld hanner Caernarfon mor fwdlyd ar yr hanner lle'r oedd y chwarae wedi bod! Setlo am sgôr 0 14 - 0 tros yr egwyl, felly.
Dechreuodd Caernarfon yr ail hanner yn gryfach ac nid oedd yn syndod pan fu i’r asgellwr Dylan Gwyn dirio reit yn y gornel chwith ar ôl 9 munud o chwarae, Yn anarferol, bu i Kelvin Morris fethu’r trosiad. Yn araf bach, enillodd pac Nant fwy a mwy o oruchafiaeth fel yr ai’r hanner yn ei flaen gan orffen y gêm yn gryf.
Chwe munud oedd yn weddill pan aeth y rhif 8, Carwyn trosodd ar ôl pwyso a phwyso ar y llinell. Troswyd y cais hwn eto. Yn ystod yr amser ychwanegol, bu i’r blaen asgellwr, Eryl dirio mewn modd tebyg eto a seliodd Carwyn ap y fuddugoliaeth trwy drosi o bellter i roi sgôr derfynol o 28 - 5.
Bydd NANT yn chwarae GARTREF yn erbyn LLANDUDNO ymhen pythefnos – Sadwrn 11eg Chwefror 2012 mewn gêm gynghrair gyda’r gic gyntaf am 2.30o’r gloch.
Nant started the match as they finished their match the previous week –with plenty of pressure on the Caernarfon line from the kick off. Indeed, two easy opportunities to score were squandered by a ‘knock on’ each time. But, captain, Elgan settled the nerves after 12 minutes when he was lat to get up after the pack had forced their way over the try line. Carwyn ap converted the first of his total of four conversions for the afternoon.
Seven minutes later, Carwyn ap (15) rounded off a superb passing movement to touch down by the posts – a try that he easily converted! Caernarfon came into the match after this period without really showing all that much threat. The muddy part of the pitch at half time indicated that the great majority of play had been in the Caernarfon defending area. Everybody settled for a 14 – 0 half time score.
Caernarfon began the second half in a much brighter fashion and it wasn’t a surprise when winger, Dylan Gwyn scored a try right in the left hand corner. Unusually for him, Kelvin Morris failed with the conversion attempt. Slowly but surely, the Nant pack became more dominant as the match wore on. Only 6 minutes remained when no 8, Carwyn scored a push over try from continious forward pressure .Carwyn ap converted. During the added time, flanker Eryl touched down in a similar manner and Carwyn ap added the extras from wide out on the left to make the final score 6 -41.
NANT’s next match is a HOME game against LLANDUDNO on Saturday afternoon, 11th February 2012 (a fortnight’s time) in a Division 1 North match with the kick off at 2.30 p.m.

Nant Conwy 28 v 5 Caernarfon
A new look Caernarfon fifteen found the going tough from the start in this third round Swalec Cup encounter at Nant Conwy. The heavy pitch was not conducive to open running rugby but for the neutral this was an entertaining open game where all concerned gave of their best. Small margins counted but the urgency and cohesion of the home pack ensured that this would be Nant's day.
From the start Caernarfon were pinned in their own half and nearly yielded an early score when the defence was breached but the final pass was knocked on. Losing the scrum kept the pressure on the Cofi defence and minutes later the centre crossed only to be brought back for a forward pass. Mathew Bohana persevered as usual and pinched the odd ball at ruck time but the home pack was quicker in mind and deed and after some fifteen minutes were rewarded. Carwyn Elis peeled from a line out, breached the defence and with quick recycled ball prop Elgan Jones was unstoppable from five meters and crashed over. Carwyn ap Myrddin slotted the conversion and soon added to his points tally when another crisp move created space out wide to allow him to sprint clear to ground on twenty minutes. Again, he succeeded with the conversion.
Caernarfon’s responses had been rare up to this point but direct running from the likes of Carnedd Williams had shown promise. Liam Leung and Sion Gwyn became prominent in the forward fight back with number eight Gareth Thirsk adding impetus to most forward charges.
At the close of the first half, a Nant penalty attempt came off the upright but quick thinking by Iolo Hughes averted further damage.
The Cofis played their best rugby by far at the beginning of the second half. A loose Nant pass was seized upon by full back Dylan Parry who hacked on and gathered. Although brought down short, quick ball and a miss pass freed wing Dylan Gwyn who squeezed in by the corner flag to put the Cofis on the scoreboard. Another similar miss pass freed Dylan Gwyn once again and the resultant chip nearly brought a touchdown for centre Gwilym Jones who was also injured in the process.
The loss of Jones and Leung to injury disrupted the Cofi flow and Nant began exerting pressure with effective counter rucking adding to their possession tally. Nant found daylight when from a five-meter scrum a series of pickups and drives resulted in Carwyn Ellis emerging victorious and Carwyn ap Myrddin again slotting the conversion. The three score gap created with ten minutes remaining was too much for the Cofis to amend and Nant finished the stronger repeating their relentless pick up and drives as directed by scrum half Ifan Jones. The urgency shown in the opposition twenty-two was justly rewarded when at the fourth time of asking Eryl Jones spun free to ground and allow Carwyn ap another conversion.
Caernarfon can have no qualms regarding the result but would be a little disappointed at the margin of victory granted. The coaching staff will however hope that those on the injury list will return soon to bolster the squad when they play at Mold in a league encounter on the 11th February.

Bethesda destroy Mold
Playing down the slope in the first half, Bethesda showed their intentions in the first few minutes of the match by running the ball on all possible occasions. After 5 minutes, following some interpassing between himself and Steven Roberts, wing Daniel Ogwen Jones crossed in the corner to open the scoring.
6 minutes later, Bethesda’s centre, Ben Stelmaszek, intercepted the ball from a Mold attack and he ran three quarters of the length of the pitch to score between the posts. Mathew Parry kicked the conversion.
In another 5 minutes, it was Parry that combined with Daniel Jones to score another try between the posts giving himself an easy conversion. By this time, the home side were in disarray with the match over as a contest.
Mold scored their only points of the match after 30 minutes play when Steve Quinton kicked a penalty. However, this proved to be of no consolation to the home side as Daniel O Jones scored his second try late on in the half making the score 24 points to 3.
The second half started well for Bethesda when Mathew Parry sliced through the home defence to score an fine individual try in the corner. His conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
With Mold playing down the slope and with nothing to lose the home players excerted pressure on the visitors and mounted a series of attacks in the Bethesda 22. However, Bethesda were in no mood to surrender any points and their defence coped well with the pressure.
With 10 minutes of the match remaining, Bethesda hooker, Steven Roberts broke free from his own half and all attempts to tackle him failed as he ran in to score the final try of the match. Parry added the conversion making to score 36 points to 3 to the visiting side.
Bethesda have to visit Mold again this season in a league match and they will be hoping for a similar result on that occasion too.

COBRA 22 v Colwyn Bay 12
Dolgellau 18 v Shotton Steel 10
Following report kindly suppied by Dolgellau RFC
Dolgellau 18 v Shotton Steel 10
Dolgellau eventually emerged victorious from this epic tussle against Division 3 promotion candidates Shotton Steel, but the result remained in the balance until the final whistle.
Following recent rain, the Marian pitch was very heavy and not to either team’s liking. However, the hosts gained an early advantage when full-back, Dion Jones, succeeded with an excellent penalty kick, directly in front of the posts, not far from the half-way line. From then then on it was one-way traffic as Shotton, playing with great determination and fervour and urged on by a hundred and more vociferous supporters, pinned the hosts in their own half for much of the opening thirty minutes.
However, it was Dolgellau who added to their advantage after twelve minutes when, during a rare foray into the opposition half, the visitors where penalised for an infringement. The referee then penalised them a further ten metres for backchat. Those vital ten metres bought the kick within Dion Jones’ range and he coolly converted from similar range to his first kick. Shotton then resumed their assault on the Dolgellau try-line but the hosts` renowned defence held firm.
A rare Dolgellau counter-attack saw the ball being moved quickly to right-wing, Ian Jones-Morris, in a bit of space near the half-way line. He set off on a run and then completely fooled the approaching defenders with an outrageous dummy which gave him a free run to the try-line, grounding the ball between the posts. The conversion was a formality for Dion Jones and so Dolgellau found themselves with a thirteen point advantage, much against the run of play.
As half-time approached Dolgellau eased themselves into the game as their forwards began to assert their authority in the set-scrums. However, they received a setback when number eight, Dylan Llywelyn was yellow carded for what seemed a pretty innocuous off-side offence. Having an extra man in the scrums gave Shotton a distinct edge which they took full advantage of. From a scrum near the Dolgellau try-line, effective flanker Daniel Lynskey, picked up and drove towards the line. Although tackled, he managed to reach out to ground the ball for a well-deserved try. Although the conversion was missed, Shotton were obviously encouraged by the 13-5 scoreline as the half-time whistle sounded.
The early minutes of the second-half saw the Dolgellau forwards, with their coach’s choice words doubtless ringing in their ears, begin to play their usual, effective, pick-up-and-drive game. However, a minute or so after Dylan Llywelyn’s return after his sin-binning, flanker Dewi Thomas was yellow-carded for an infringement, thus allowing the Shotton pack the chance to regain the initiative. However, much credit must go to the Dolgellau forwards, the front row in particular, for their efforts to quell the Shotton fire and survive the sin-binning period without yielding a further score.
As Dolgellau pushed hard for a second try they were awarded a set scrum near the Shotton try line. The home pack trundled forward in unison, giving number eight, Dylan Llywelyn the chance to pick and ground the ball for an excellent forwards` try. Although the conversion was missed, the 18-5 scoreline seemed comfortable enough.
Shotton however, had other ideas and continued to attack with vigour and their efforts were rewarded when Daniel Lynskey, without a doubt, Shotton’s star player, broke away from a scrum and sprinted over the Dolgellau try line, to the right of the posts. Luckily for the hosts, the conversion was missed, which meant that Shotton would have to score at least twice in the remaining minutes to overtake them. Although they continued to press, the Dolgellau defence held firm and an 18-10 victory was secured.
Shotton Steel are in an advantageous position in Division 3 and should they secure promotion they would certainly be a team to watch out for in Division 2 next season.
Dolgellau full-back, Dion Jones was nominatedMan of the Match for his place kicking and secure play under the high ball. He was pushed hard for the honour by Shotton’s excellent Daniel Lynskey.

CIACS 12 v Llandrindod Wells 35
Despite the final scoreline, this was no stroll for Llandrindod in the Cardiff afternoon sunshine. CIACS are a sprightly side, well capable of causing headaches with their adventurous backs, and there were periods in the third quarter of the match when Llandrindod were in danger of conceding the lead.
The visitors started off at a fair gallop. Forwards Jamie Watkins, Geraint Evans and David Ramplee all making their mark early on but it was Gary Pritchard who scored first for Llandrindod when, after a Llandrindod penalty kick at goal went wide, he had the presence of mind to be following up and grab the ball before the bemused defenders could get to it, and touch down, Mathew Williams converting.
Llandrindod second try was interesting too. A passing movement involving backs and an unlikely pairing of the two Llandrindod props, Lee James and Richard Watkins, gave James the space to power his way over the line.
CIACS first try came towards the end of this half when Gareth Rossiter touched down in the corner. No conversion but the balance was restored just before the whistle with a David Williams try for Llandrindod giving the visitors a comfortable 12 point cushion at the break.
The way the match had gone previously, and the points cushion, probably lured Llandrindod in to a period of complacency. The CIACS restart after the break was wide and only just went the distance but it bemused Llandrindod who conceded ground rapidly and a series of mauls in the Llandrindod 25, resulted in a CIACS try under the posts by Aled Edwards, conversion by Mathew Craft.
For the next fifteen minutes it was all CIACS as Llandrindod struggled to regain control. Eventually, though, CIACS ran out of steam, and a couple of searing runs by Llandrindod centre Dan Ruell softened up the CIACS defence enough so that when a clearance kick was sliced Tom Kendrick had only two men to beat to the line and score. Williams converting.
Two penalties in succession against CIACS increased Llandrindod's lead and their final try came from Williams, following another failed clearance by CIACS.
Llandrindod, who are now in the top half of the League table, have no match this weekend due to the internationals. The following Saturday, 11 February, they travel to Cambrian Welfare in the League.

Colwyn Bay Youth 17 v Ruthin Youth 5
The Bay’s excellent home form continued with a hard fought victory against last year's league champions Ruthin. The visitors arrived with only 14 players with uncontested scrums being elected by them, unfortunately within the first five minutes they were reduced to 13 players when their prop suffered an ankle injury.
The Bay’s points were all scored in the first half with the Bay pack gaining valuable metres led by Callum Mitchell and captain Sam Ryan who punched holes in the Ruthin defence with their direct runs. The increase in tempo led to the first try when Callum Mitchell’s quick tap penalty in their opponents 22 he offloaded to fly-half Pat Atkinson who passed to the supporting full-back Harry Donegan to touchdown.
Ruthin absorbed numerous attacks in the first quarter but their back division always looked threatening when their playmaker and fly-half Phyl Roberts took control either with ball in hand or his tactical kicking.
Against the run of play the home side found themselves defending a line-out deep in their own 22 and Matt Phelan’s important steal and scrum-half Kieran Fardoe’s quick pass to his fly-half to clear his lines proved invaluable for his side's next try.
From the resulting line-out the ball went out to the opposition fly-half who fumbled the ball under pressure from The Bay’s no.8 Lloyd Jones who hacked the ball twice to win the race to score under the posts and Pat Atkinson added the conversion. Line-out specialist Matt Phelan scored a deserved try with his catch and drive from a throw-in deep in the Ruthin 22 for his sides third try and lead at the interval by 17 unanswered points.
The visitors, as expected, applied more pressure in the second half and enjoyed long periods in the Bay half frequently breaking the home side’s first line of defence and only being stopped by some last ditch tackling.
Good phase play and re-cycling saw Ruthin’s Phyl Roberts scorein the corner.Numerous substitutions were made during the second half with all players making creditable performances especially winger Ash Jones, second row Nathan Jackson and flanker Geraint Owen.
Both sides worked hard and the two sets of defences were stretched to the limit with The Bay’s full-back Harry Donegan equally as good in attack and defence but the man of the match was awarded to second row Matt Phelan for his tireless workrate.

NEWTOWN 3 v 17 BANGOR
BANGOR BACK IN THE CHASE
After many cancellations from other clubs Bangor Youth finally got back into action with the first game since November 1st with a fine victory away to Newtown.
Bangor got a squad of 20 to make the long journey and they were all needed for this win. Newtown had an impressive looking squad of 21 players available and gave a good account of themselves. A physical battle with neither pack taking a step back turned the 1st half into a hard contest with Newtown just feeding off Bangor knock-ons to gain territory. Bangor always looked better running and passing the ball with the ball and this eventually paid off with scrum half Rhys Jones sneaking over for the 1st try which went unconverted. Newtown struck back almost immediately with a penalty leaving the Half time score at 5 - 3 to Bangor.
A team talk during the interval produced results and Bangor played a much better second half. They applied more pressure to the home team and played a wider game. This pressure resulted in a try for Declan Jones which Alex Griffiths duly converted. With Newtown getting frustrated and Bangor players sensing a win it was only a matter of time before the next score and this try came from Captain Rhun Morris making it 17 - 3 to Bangor.
The game was a physical encounter and both teams contributed to a good game which was played in good spirit with lots of banter on and off the field. Bangor’s team spirit was demonstrated by Rhun Morris and Gwion Williams who revised for their exams on the coach rather than miss this game and without their experience, this win would have been much more difficult.

Colwyn Bay 2nds 0 v Mold 2nds 30
On a still sunny day at Brookfield Drive the Bay 2s season showed improvement again when they came off second best in the first round of the Clwyd Cup against visitors Mold 2s by 4 tries (2 concerted) and 2 penalties to none.
By the end of the first quarter the visitors had scored 2 tries (1 converted) and 2 penalties to get to 18 points. Tries came from flanker Tom Jenner and inside centre Moses Tauyavu with the conversion and two penalties being slotted by outside centre Adam Blunden.
The Bay did well then for the next two quarters of the game tackling with much greater precision than of late and just missing out on a run away try from centre Serge Cabazuelo by a cruel bounce. They did not concede a point during that time but as they tired in the last quarter two further tries for Mold came from fly half Richard Cochran (converted by Blunden) and wing Steve Roberts.
The Ceebees are now in the Plate with a game v Rhos Wrexham which they can look forward to with growing confidence to give them a chance of their fourth final in four years.
