Head coach Clive Griffiths praises 'awesome performance'
RGC 1404 head coach Clive Griffiths described his side’s win over Premiership outfit Tonmawr as an “awesome performance with some outstanding tries”.
And he added: “No one should underestimate that result. Some of the tries were top drawer and we showed our intent to play with some kick and go and running the ball. We built on last week’s victory against Aberavon.
“The boys did themselves, the coaches and the region proud with thatŠ result against a top-class Premiership side and to nil them on tries was extremely pleasing.”
A strong Tonmawr side opened the scoring with a penalty from Dai Flanagan but the first try went to the home side with Luke Cudmore powering over. Connor Braid converted to make it 7-3.
The South Walians wanted to run the ball at every opportunity so the RGC defence needed to be strong with plenty of tackles being made early in the game.
Tom Sneddon scored the second RGC try after quick hands from the back line and a reverse pass from Connor Braid had the Parc Eirias crowd on their feet. Braid converted for 14-3.
Another penalty from Dai Flannagan brought Tonmawr back in the game but Canadians Jebb Sinclair and Luke Cudmore were making some big tackles to stop the away side from breaking through the RGC defensive line.
A superb third RGC try that involved a Jebb Sinclair pinpoint pass and Sean White’s pace breaking the line led to Ben Stemalseck running over, much to the appreciation of the home crowd as Braid again added the extras.
Although Tonmawr reduced the deficit with a penalty, Stemalseck nabbed his second try and the points tally was further enhanced when the North Walians’ scrum rolled over the line and Jeremy Kyne touched down.
Another top class move involving five players was finished by Cudmore for his second try and Richard Hopkins ran over in the corner for the seventh try to send the supporters home in a great mood.
Griffiths and his squad will now be hoping build on this performance and make it three wins in succession when they travel to take on Carmarthen Quins next Saturday.
