An excellent performance saw RGC take the spoils in their final game before the serious business of Division One East starts next week.
The RGC 1404 Senior side played their final pre-season friendly against Caldy on Friday evening at a very wet Ruthin Rugby Club. Looking for a solid performance prior to next week's opening League Fixture, away at Gilfach Goch, the RGC 1404 side had the vast majority of both possession and territory in the first period and, with the scrum in particularly dominant form, it was not surprising that the home side finished the first half with a 17-0 lead. Tries having been scored by Kelvin Davies, Afon Bagshaw and Richard Hopkins, Rhodri Carlton Jones adding 1 conversion.
Both sides made multiple changes at the start of the second half which inevitably had the effect of making the game increasingly stop-start but, in spite of the at times shocking weather conditions, both teams continued to play attacking rugby leading to further scores for the RGC side from Davies again, Alex Schwarz and Carlton Jones, the latter adding 2 conversions before Caldy scored a consolation try with almost the last play of the game.
Speaking after the game RGC 1404 Head Coach Chris Horsman said,
'The pre-season friendlies have been everything that we wanted them to be and I could not be more delighted as to how the entire playing squad has responded to the challenges they have presented. Whilst winning 2 of the 3 was great what was more important was the performance that we produced and whilst we have still got a lot of hard work to do we are definitely heading in the right direction.'
