Conditions were very favourable but a little windy as the RGC 1404 under 16’s welcomed their Scarlets counterparts to Rydal Penrhos, for the first match in this year’s age grade competition
As the match got under way it was the visitors who started the brighter when a couple of penalties for the home side failed to find touch, and allowed the Scarlets to counter with some surging attacks into the young gogs half and only some excellent cover tackles from the gogs, and especially Morgan Williams prevented an early score.
The deadlock was broken after 8 minutes when the home side were penalised at the scrum and a quick tap an go resulted in the Scarlets blindside flanker Josh Middleton crashing over.
The North Walians began to settle and early problems at the lineout were put right and there was parity in the scrums but the breakdown remained a problem throughout the afternoon, with the visitors consistently quicker and forcing several turnovers as the first half wore on.
And it was from a turnover on 18 minutes in the home sides 22 that allowed Josh Middleton to dart down the blindside and score his second try, giving the Scarlets a 10 nil advantage at half time, having missed both conversion attempts.
The second half started with home team on the front foot but try as they might they were unable to breach a solid Scarlets defence. Cameron Davies was at last able to get some better quality ball and set his backs free but with the wind in their favour the Scarlets were able to clear the danger and force the gogs back into their own half.
With everything still to play for the North Wales boys battled on but on 37 minutes the Scarlets worked the ball wide to put winger Luke Morris over in the corner.
This effectively sealed the contest and another similar score from the winger on 66 minutes rounded off the match, with a 20 points to nil win for the West Wales outfit.
All in all a disappointing day for the young North Walians but with a little more composure and an improvement at the breakdown they can go the Dragons in two weeks time confident of being competitive and securing their first win of the campaign.
