Rhyl Rugby Club Roundup 12/13 January 2013
Rhyl U8s put on two spectacular performances in the two games against a weak Llandudno team. They won the first game 15 tries without reply, with tries coming from all direction as Rhyl ran riot and showed no mercy towards the home team. Try scorers were Airan Semple, who led the way with 4, Jack Walsh and Ryan Espley, who both scored hat tricks, Dilan Volshenic scored a brace and the tremendous try haul was completed by Daniel Roberts, Roman Hodgson and Hayden Yeomans.
In the second game Rhyl continued as they did in the first encounter and showed great skill and speed to win 7 tries to 1 with tries conjured up by Joseph Roberts and Dylan Cook, who scored a brace apiece. Owain Espley, Ethan Philpott and a try scored in the dying seconds of the game by Finley Mills rounded off a fantastic day of rugby for the jubilant Rhyl U8 squad.

Rhyl U9s travelled to Llandudno and took part in two very entertaining games. Game 1 resulted in a 5 tries to 3 win to Rhyl with tries coming from Sion Roberts 2, Evan Espley 1 and Paddy Nelson 2. Rhyl's defence was key with some huge hits coming from Roan Pritchard, Paddy Nelson and Torrin Jones.
Game 2 was a closer affair ending in a draw 4 tries a piece, tries coming from Paddy Nelson 2, Sion Roberts 1 and Roan Pritchard 1. Despite a lengthy lay off and the Christmas break coach Richie Nelson was happy with the performance overall. With a little more communication in defence the U9s would have come away from Llandudno with 2 wins.

Rhyl U10s got their new year off to a fine start winning their two matches against Llandudno. The first game saw Rhyl shade a high scoring display 40 points to 35 win. The second game was even closer with Rhyl winning by a single point 29-28. 3 tries were scored by Callum Gardner, 1 try from Tomos Harrison and two from Captain Owen Reece Jones. Man of the Match was awarded to Christian Hone with a fine display of hard tackling. He was backed up by strong rucking from Connor Mkenna and Aled Jones.
In the second match the outcome was even closer but tries from Tomos Harrison and Ewan Court and a first try for Kai Wilson saw Rhyl win the match as the whole team refused to give up and kept out Llandudno right up to the final whistle.

Rhyl Youth 5 v COBRA Youth 52
Rhyl Rugby Club Youth team’s winning run came to an end with a bump on Saturday at the Waen against a classy COBRA side that showed why they are in second spot in the North Wales League, as they beat Rhyl by 52 points to 5. It didn’t start well for Rhyl when a poor catch from the opening kick off led to COBRA’s first try with less than a minute on the clock. Rhyl were slow to get into the game and spent much of the first half chasing shadows as the defensive training didn’t translate into solid defence on the pitch.
However a half time talking to from the coaches along with a few substitutions led to an improved second half performance. Zach Goddard came off the bench and made an impact as did Tom Allum, playing his first league game for the Youth team.
Man of the Match went to Tim Back who tackled himself into the ground. A late consolation try for Matty Jones in last couple of minutes was a highlight and put his side on the scoreboard. Due to injuries and absences Rhyl fielded six 16 year olds and coach Dom Senger praised their performances, which augurs well for the future. This coming Saturday Rhyl face another stern test when they travel to league leaders Llangefni.

Llandudno 2nds 34 pts v Rhyl 2nds 0
Mike Potter’s makeshift side travelled along the coast and returned with nothing to show for their efforts as they tumbled to a 6 try defeat. Llandudno held the upper hand in the scrum although Rhyl shone in the lineout. The home side’s backs took a long time to get to grips with the idea of using the ball on the overlap but when they did in the second half they were able to use possession to good effect to put themselves out of sight. This week Rhyl travel to Wrexham for a league match.

Llangollen 1sts 30 pts v Rhyl 1sts 30 pts
Despite returning from the Dee Valley on Saturday with three points after scoring four tries in a hard fought draw, Rhyl will be bitterly disappointed that after giving themselves a mountain to climb by virtue of a poor opening period, only some basic errors stopped them from coming back to the Waen with a victory.
The visitors were 15 points down after the first 10 minutes, Llan’s big pack driving over for two close range tries on the heavy pitch and a long afternoon looked likely for the young Dragons team. However again Rhyl started to settle and show their character and after a good passage of play, captain Dale Blackmore crossed to score from a lovely cross field kick from Callum Bennet. A further Bennet penalty brought Rhyl back into it and meant a half time score of 15 points to 8.
The second period was a more even affair with both sides enjoying periods of pressure but an excellent solo try from wing Nick Wolstenholme pulled Rhyl closer only for Llan to reply immediately. Despite 2 more tries, from Jack Hughes and Callum Bennet, Rhyl couldn't find a winning score and it was the home side who could have stolen the win as they missed a penalty with the last kick of the game.
The Dragons are at home to Machynlleth this coming Saturday and Coach Phil Blakoe will be looking for a brighter start and less of the needless penalties that have cost them so dear this season.
