Second half change of tactics sees Ruthin claim cup for second year in succession
COBRA Youth 8 v Ruthin Youth 14
The first half of this tense affair saw COBRA win the lion's share of possession as their forwards gained the upper hand, especially in the set pieces. However, all they had to show for their dominance at the half time interval was a 5-0 lead, thanks to a Lloyd Mayor try, scored at twenty two minutes of the half.
In the second half, Ruthin changed to Plan B and started to play a more expansive game, keeping the ball from the COBRA forwards and it was no suprise when they equalised thirteen minutes in to the half with a Llew Edwards try, converted by Robbie Cryne to make it 7-5 to Ruthin.
Two minutes later Ruthin missed a fairly easy looking penalty. Their second try arrived a couple of minutes later through Will Mitchelmore, again converted by Robbie Cryne to give last year's cup winners a bit of breathing space at 14-5.
Twenty five minutes in to the half COBRA had the chance to narrow the gap but a penalty attempt went agonisingly wide. COBRA pressurised for the next ten minutes but the Ruthin defence defended well to thwart every attack and frustrate COBRA. With just a couple of minutes to go, Harry Jukes scored a penalty for COBRA bit it was all 'too little too late' as Ruthin hung on to claim the Cup for the second year in succession.
