The first competitive fixture of the New Year saw the RGC 1404 senior side gain a hard-fought victory, and in the process the Bleddyn Williams Cup, against a spirited Rydal Vikings team.
The fixture had originally been planned to take place before Christmas but the wet weather put paid to that and it was very much a case of keeping fingers crossed to avoid any such repitition.
However a cold, but dry, day meant the game could go ahead giving RGC coach, Chris Horsman, both a chance to look at his senior squad players in a competitive situation and to introduce a number of this year's RGC 1404 Under 18 team to the senior playing environment. On both counts the game can be seen as a resounding success with Horsman being able to put on the pitch over 30 members of his squad including 8 members of the Under 18 squad.
Although in the end the RGC side scored four tries, just as pleasing was their defensive effort in restricting the Vikings to just a solitary score of their own.
Speaking after the game, Marc Roberts the WRU Performance Development Manager for North Wales said, "Rydal Vikings proved to be a true test and both teams played with an intent to run the ball. This was exactly the type of fixture that RGC needed at this stage of the project. The most pleasing aspect of the day for me was the inclusion of eight academy players in the RGC squad, seven of whom were performing in there fist ever senior game and all performed well and looked comfortable with the transition into the senior game"
RGC 1404 next game is at home to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 18th January
