Cobra ladies travelled up to Deeside on a blustery Sunday to take on Shotton Steel. Having opted to play into the wind in the first half Cobra knew they would have to work hard for every yard they gained. Despite some strong defence from Shotton, Cobra managed to get an early breakthrough in the form of a try from the returning Libby Jones, one of four she would score during the game.
Wing Katie Evans added a quick brace during the opening quarter to put Cobra in a strong position. It is a credit to Shotton’s strong midfield defence that Cobra were having to make their breaks out wide, but this was a challenge the visitors were more than happy to take on with skilful handling from centres Bronwen Evans and Kirsty Walsh putting Fiona Moss and Ffion Williams in for tries out wide.
Strong carrying from the Cobra forwards took its toll however as Catrin Davies and player of the match Gemma Robinson crossed before halftime, leaving Cobra with a strong halftime advantage.
The second half continued in the same vain with strong carrying from the pack and skilful handling from the backs seeing Davies, Moss, Robinson and skipper Williams ending with two tries each. Scrum half Fiona Davies also bagged two tries capping an impressive display directing the Cobra forwards around the field. Williams to her credit, managed to slot 7 conversions in extremely challenging conditions.
A tough day for Steel, but heart was shown throughout which will stand them in good stead for the rest of the season. Cobra look to maintain their recent good form in the Game-on league away at Holyhead next Sunday
