Bangor Youth 14 v Ruthin Youth 20
Bangor youths met division 1 Ruthin in the semi-final of the North Wales Youth Cup and came close to winning only to implode near the end giving away two quick tries to lose the lead they had held for most of the game.
Ruthin put Bangor under pressure from the kick off and soon had a penalty from the boot of outside half Phil Roberts. Soon after they forced a lineout on the 5 m line and forming a good maul drove over the Bangor try line and hooker Alex Penfold got the ball down for an unconverted try. At this stage Bangor started their fight back and with their big forwards dominating the scrums they spent a long time occupying the Ruthin 22 metre area. A Ruthin player had a 10 minute sin bin for handling on the ground and Bangor's Declan Jones took a tap penalty laying it back to Harry Caulfield who made it over the line for a try. Winger Alex Griffiths kicked a fine conversion to make it a 7 pointer.
Ruthin launched some attacks from the restart with their speedy three quarters giving Bangor problems but Bangor defended and got play back into Ruthin territory where a series of powerful scrums and numerous penalty offences by Ruthin got Bangor close to the try line. Another penalty saw Declan Jones take a tap and dive over the try line. Griffiths' conversion brought the score to 14 - 8 in favour of Bangor. Ruthin should have scored before the break producing some good back moves but failed to use a clear overlap and were kept out until the half time whistle.
Soon after the start of the second half Ruthin took off one of their front row and the scrums became uncontested which was to the disadvantage of Bangor who had been taking scrums against the head. This gave the visitors clean possession and the half proceeded with both sides making attacks and defending stoutly. Bangor forced the ball over the Ruthin try line a few times but were held up and this was to cost them dearly as thy failed to make the game safe. Bangor gave away many penalties by holding onto the ball in the tackle and Ruthin took a quick tap only to be stopped by Jordan Scott who was sin binned for almost the rest of the game. Ruthin surged helped on by penalties and eventually sent the ball out from un uncontested scrum to the blind side where they had an overlap and full back Bryn Shepherd went in at the corner. The conversion missed and Bangor still lead by a single point. Ruthin really had the wind in their sails and from the restart ran the ball back at Bangor and loose tackling let them make ground. A kick was floated into the 22 m area and winger Daffydd parry got a foot to it hacking it on under the posts and dropped on it for a try converted Phil Roberts. Bangor finished in good style and came close to scoring but time ran out and Bangor's' brave run of victories came to an end.
