A fine performance by Tata as they rack up 50 points against the RGC senior squad.
TATA Steel 50 v RGC 1404 14
Following on from last Saturday's win against Bargoed, the RGC 1404 side went into their second pre-season friendly against Tata Steel full of confidence and for the first 30 minutes of the opening half they competed well against a side many feel will win this year's Championship.
In spite of conceding an early interception try they more than held their own against what was a very physical and skilful Tata side. Open-side flanker Tom Parry won plenty of turnover ball and in spite of being under pressure at the scrum the forwards won plenty of possession for the RGC 1404 backline. However the last 10 minutes of the half saw the South Walians score four unanswered tries with their forwards and backs combining to great effect.
The second half was, fortunately from the RGC 1404 perspective, to prove a much more even affair and it was they who scored the opening try of the half when scrum-half Afon Bagshaw dived over from 5 metres out. Although Tata were to score 3 more tries of their own,one a length of the field effort, following another interception, it was the North Walians who had the final say of the game when great work from Mike Jones allowed Harri Evans to ghost in from just inside the 22.
Speaking after the game Head Coach Chris Horsman said,
'Whilst disappointed with both losing and the margin of the defeat, we can still take much from the game, not least the fact that we kept going right up until the final whistle. We intended for our pre-season fixtures to be a real test for the players and that is why we arranged for games against opposition from a higher level than the one we will be playing in. We managed to get 27 players on the pitch today all of whom now know the level of Rugby we need to aspire to. Whilst we still have a long way to go I saw nothing today to indicate that we are not going in the right direction.'
