Despite the rain it was still a busy weekend on and off the pitch for Clwb Rygbi Dinbych
The continuing poor weather conditions put paid to the Mini Juniors planned fixtures on Sunday but Clwb Rygbi Dinbych enjoyed a very successful Saturday on and off the pitch.
A busy day for the Club started at 1.00 p.m. with a ceremony to name the stand in memory of the late J Berwyn Evans, a stalwart of Clwb Rygbi Dinbych and North Wales rugby in general.
Berwyn was one of the founders of Clwb Rygbi Dinbych and became a life member of the club having served with distinction as its first chairman and subsequently two terms as Club President.
Clwb Rygbi Dinbych were delighted to invite Mrs Morfydd Evans, to dedicate the stand in honour of her late husband. A sizeable number of Berwyn’s family and friends braved the elements to attend the ceremony including many former players who had benefitted from his tutelage.
The Club’s senior players also ensured they paid a fitting tribute to Berwyn’s legacy as both the First team and Second team notched notable fixtures against Caernarfon.
Those who knew Berwyn Evans will remember that he was also committed to ensuring that the club facilities were to the highest standard. It was therefore fitting, that Saturday evening saw an auction of promises held to raise funds for renewing the clubhouse flooring.
The Club’s supporters showed their generosity donating over 60 items for the auction. Particular thanks are due to former Mini Juniors player and chef Bryn Williams for his donation of a meal for 6 people at his Odette’s restaurant in London that proved to be the evening’s highest earning item. Alun Thomas of the Mason’s Arms and Sion Powell also made significant contributions to the event.
On the night, the club was packed to capacity with eager bidders and all the items were sold thanks to the persuasive auctioneering of two of the Vale of Clwyd’s finest thespians, Iwan Charles and Llyr Ifans. By the end of the night, a marvellous £6,000 had been raised for club funds.
Clwb Rygbi Dinbych wish to say a massive “Diolch yn fawr iawn “ to all those who supported the event by donating, bidding or simply attending the event.
More fundraising will be taking place on Saturday 8 February as Dinbych’s Veterans take on their Bala counterparts in a game kicking off at Caeau les Phillips at 12.30 before the Ireland v Wales six nations game.
Proceeds from the game will be given to the Yogi, The Spinal Injuries Holiday Foundation. The charity was established by Bala stalwart Bryan “Yogi” Davies last year to provide grants and support to individuals and families who have suffered a spinal injury. Yogi was a contemporary of many of Dinbych’s Vets and the team were anxious to offer a gesture of support to his chosen cause following his untimely passing last August.
Dinbych and Bala have a history of great contests on the field and warm camaraderie off it. The Club hopes that a good crowd will turn out to a view a game that would surely have met with Yogi’s approval..
