Welshpool Rugby Club has launched a new initiative to reach out into the wider community by hosting a series of family oriented events this weekend.
On Saturday, the club relocates to the Corn Exchange in Welshpool Town Hall for an Open Day which will enable residents see what the club is all about, and what it can offer.
Spokesperson Barry Williams said it is vital that the club continues its hard work to re-establish itself as a club for the whole area after a couple of testing seasons of rebuilding.
“There will be the opportunity to meet with officials from the club, gain information about the numerous sides we run and the benefits of being involved with the club, take a look at pictures from the club’s past and present, get information about forthcoming events, as well as a Cake Sale and Merchandise Sale,” said Williams.
On Sunday, there will be two events starting with a Novices Training Session in the morning, and a Touch Rugby Tournament in the afternoon.
“The Novices Training session provides a fantastic introduction for new players without being thrown into a full training session alongside more experienced players, as would happen at most clubs,” said Williams. “The sessions are open to men and women aged 16 and over, and will be hosted by the Head Coaches of our Senior Men’s and Women’s teams, Dave Roberts and Nick Larder.
“The Touch Rugby Tournament is open to anyone aged 13 and over, male or female (women and girls tries count double). Teams will consist of six players, with a maximum squad size of seven. Everyone is welcome to take part. If you’ve got a full side, that’s great, but if you just want to come and take part, we’ll find a team for you to play in.”
Entry is £2 per player, with 30% of the entry money going to the winning side, and 20% going to the runners-up. There will also be a barbeque and refreshments available.
“It is our hope that the local community will be keen to come and see what we have to offer them, and as an added incentive, anyone who attends any part of our Join the Beat weekend enters into a free draw to win two tickets to the Wales v Argentina Autumn International (November 10).
“At present, we are the only rugby club in Mid Wales that offers the opportunity to play rugby to everyone within their community: we have players from the ages of six to 56, both male and female, and we have a wider range of participants than any other sports club in Welshpool.
“We are a fast-growing club, and proud of the good work we are doing within our local community: Our junior section numbers over 100 players, and has representatives from 18 different local schools. The players representing our two senior sides all live and work in the local area, with many of them having played for the club from a young age.
“Our women’s and girls’ set-up is the only one of its kind in Mid Wales, and is developing at a remarkable rate. We are in the process of expanding our facilities to include a further two playing fields, which will help us to accommodate the number of teams that we run.
“Despite this, we are often portrayed in a negative light in some quarters, and we would like to take this opportunity to show the local community what our club is really about, and that there is a place for everyone within our club, regardless of age, gender, experience or ability.
