Llandudno 2nds 15 v Wrexham 2nds 26
On a sunny but blustery day in Llandudno on Saturday, the visitors Wrexham came back from fifteen points down after 30 minutes to become the only scorers in the last hour to clinch the Clwyd Plate by 4 tries (3 converted) to 2 tries (1 converted) and a penalty.
Tudno started well with the wind at their backs and after 5 minutes fly half Johnny Evans kicked a penalty when the Wrexham forwards infringed in the loose. For the next 20 minutes neither team was able to prevail but then Evans showed his class by timing a sweet pass to allow winger Meyrick Jones to touch down unopposed wide out. Eight minutes later, the move was repeated as the Evans/Jones axis again clicked to register Tudno’s second try which Evans this time was able to convert. 15-0 to Llandudno after 33 minutes.
Tudno however were not able to trouble the scorers for the rest of the game. Wrexham started to gain more control up front and the increased possession quickly resulted in points with inside centre Scott “Einstein” Davies seizing on a loose ball and running a full 50 yards, shrugging off tackles as he went, to touch down wide out. 5 minutes later the medicine was repeated with Davies doing a very creditable impression of Sonny Boy Williams running at pace with the ball clutched in his outside hand as he danced around Llandudno’s despairing defence to score. This time fly half John Gormley converted. 15-12 at halftime and Wrexham revived.
Wrexham’s resurgence continued in the second half with Davies scoring his third try which Gormley converted. Gormley himself went close with a long-range drop goal attempt before Wrexham outside centre Andre Rondell rounded off a long series of phases to touch down under the posts. Gormley added his third conversion.
A game worthy of a final played between two competive sides who perhaps by and large could not be said to be in the first flush of youth but who showed in all phases of play more than just the odd flash of former glories.
