Chris Kilfoyle stands down after serving Wrexham RFC for over 32 years
WREXHAM REPORT –ANNUAL DINNER 2012
Wrexham Rugby Club players, officials and supporters rounded off their season at their traditional Annual Dinner and Presentation of Awards evening at their clubhouse in Bryn Estyn Lane on Friday.
Pete Blakemore deservedly claimed the top Adrian Hill Players’ Player of the Year Award for his outstanding performances in the back-row of the pack throughout the season. He took over as club captain when Guy Bingham suffered long term injury after only 5 games and he led by example to claim also the Bernard Malley Award for the player making the most appearances.
The Harry Hollywell Coaches’ Player of the Year Award went to flanker James Lichfield who made a big impact in his first season at the club despite being hampered by injury at the mid season stage. Former Youth Team prop forward Danny Wolfenden was the popular recipient winner of the Most Improved Player award.
Colours ties, awarded to players appearing in over 75% of games in their first full senior campaign, were presented to flanker Pete Blakemore and Danny Wolfenden.
The Under 19 Youth Team enjoyed a challenging season under the management of Tony Coates and coaching of Barry Lewis, Carl Turner and Kevin Powell. They finished in a solid mid table position in Division One of the North Wales Youth League and drew particular acclaim for their performances in the League’s Plate Competition, losing by 17-18 to Nant Conwy in a nail biting final.
The new Cliff Forward Memorial Trophy, presented by the family of Wrexham’s legendary outside-half to the outstanding youth team player of the year, went to scrum-half Tom Robinson who was a vital link between forwards and backs. The Coaches Youth Team Player Award went to flanker Adam Coates, the Youth Team Players’ Player Award was presented to James Price, while lock Luke Hassall claimed the Most Promising Youth Team Player Award.
The Delwyn Griffiths Award, for outstanding service to the club, was presented to Chris Kilfoyle who has served the club in various capacities for 32 years and has now decided to stand down as the club’s Press Officer.
Next season, Wrexham will be playing in North Wales Division Three where they will renew their rivalry with their close neighbours Rhos as well as taking on old adversaries Welshpool, Newtown and Bangor. Chairman Barry Williams announced that to set the process in motion there will be a Players Meeting at the clubhouse where players will have a chance to air their views on how the new season should be approached.
