Once again Y GOGs went on a pilgrimage to the far flung corner of the world – well Europe in fact to represent Wales.
Geriatrics o Gymru was an apt description in that players from both Bangor and Tenby joined the Caernarfon contingent to create a truly all Wales team.
The 11th European Golden Oldies Rugby Festival was located in Trieste, north east Italy and Y GOGs were amongst 40 teams represented.
In temperatures of over 30% playing rugby was not easy but with plenty of water intake, 4 games were played over 2 days and Y GOGs came close to winning every game!
These festivals are an opportunity to meet many old friends to make many new ones as well. Many of the teams had been to Caernarfon in 2010 for the highly successful festival which was organised by Y GOGs.
It was heartening to hear so many teams saying that Caernarfon was the best festival they had attended and the standard of hospitality and food was far superior to many other festivals.
The hero of the hour was Owen Walters from Plymouth, who was born in Manobier,
Pembrokeshire and has been a stalwart for Y GOGs since Zurich in 2006. Owen who is 70 and half years old scored 4 tries (one in each game) and each from 0.5 metres out!
It was announced that the 12th EGO Festival will be held at Prague in 2013 so as not to clash with the World event and the next all Wales festival will be hosted at Tenby with the date to be announced.
